2020 ITF J4 Orlando
Singles Quarters Set for Wednesday
October 27, 2020

Main draw play continued on Tuesday at the 2020 ITF J4 Orlando event, hosted by the USTA National Campus. The day was highlighted by the singles draws being narrowed down to the quarterfinals while the first doubles contests of the week also took to the courts.
The three boys’ seeds able to survive the opening round picked up wins again on Tuesday to move into the quarterfinals. No. 1 Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (Paraguay) toughed out the opening frame in a tiebreak before pulling away from American Ryan Colby 6-3 in the second set. Next up for Vallejo will be unseeded Nedim Suko (USA), who was on the brink of defeat before rallying back for a 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over fellow American Lucas Brown. Third-seeded Azuma Visaya (USA) and No. 7 Braden Shick (USA) are set to clash in the quarterfinals after breezing through the second round; Shick has been the sharpest player in the field, dropping just five games so far.
American qualifier Joseph Phillips, coming off winning his first match 11-9 in the third set tiebreak, took care of Great Britain’s Wil Jenkins 6-2, 6-4 while Nicholas Godsick came through 6-1, 6-4 against Kian Vakili in a battle of American wild cards. Phillips will face off with Colton Smith (USA) on Wednesday; Godsick’s next foe will be Italian and recent Texas A&M commit Giulio Perego.
After Monday produced very little drama in the girls’ singles draw, a total of five seeds were eliminated on Tuesday. American qualifier Tsehay Driscoll got off to another slow start, losing the first set 6-0 to No. 2 Ava Krug (USA), but stormed back to secure the upset in three sets. Wild card Ashlyn Krueger (USA) also was forced to shake off a rocky first set in taking out eighth-seeded Brooklyn Olson of the United States 2-6, 6-1, 6-1; Krueger and Driscoll have drawn each other in the quarterfinals. Grace O’Donnell (USA) hung tough to upset No. 3 Chelsea Fontenel of Switzerland 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 and will next take on sixth seed American Katja Wiersholm.
Top-seeded Alexis Blokhina (USA) is the only seed left in the top half, but she did not reach the final eight easily after facing a stiff challenge from fellow American Mia Slama; Blokhina eventually prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Awaiting Blokhina in the quarterfinals is Calissa Dellabarca (USA), who looked solid in ousting No. 5 Luciana Moyano (Argentina) 6-1, 6-3. Qualifier Sarah Hamner of the United States ran her winning streak in Orlando to five matches thanks to a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 defeat of lucky loser Kathryn Treiber (USA). Hamner will take on her third straight American in the main draw when she plays Olivia Lincer Wednesday after Lincer beat No. 7 Eva Elbaz (France) 7-6(0), 7-5.
Doubles finally got underway Tuesday afternoon as well. Boys’ top seeds Sam Scherer (USA) and Visaya survived a tough test from Americans Maximus Dussault and Tanner Povey by virtue of a 6-7(7), 6-2, 10-2 triumph. Last week’s finalists in Atlanta – No. 7 Brown (USA) and Stian Klaassen (Netherlands) – also advanced to the quarterfinals, as did Atlanta champion Shick, who is playing with fellow American Colby this week.
The American tandem of Julia Fliegner and Elisabeth Jones look to be a real threat to win back-to-back titles after capturing the crown in Atlanta; they won two matches on Tuesday, including stunning the second-seeded pairing of Krug and Sophie Williams 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. Hamner and Krueger also teamed up to bring their high level of play from singles onto the doubles court, scoring a 6-3, 4-6, 10-1 victory over No. 4 seeds Jingyi Li (China) and Moyano.
Matches continue Wednesday at 8 a.m. with all quarterfinal singles matches while the doubles draws will be down to the semifinals by the end of the day. For more information on the 2020 ITF J4 Orlando, click here.
