Saturday’s excitement with the return of events at the USTA National Campus quickly faded to frustration on Sunday, as a rare complete washout did now allow for a single point to be played at the 2020 USTA FL Mixed 40 & Over 6.0/8.0 Sectional Championships.

The 6.0 division was particularly decimated by Mother Nature since all dual matches were slated to be completed by Sunday afternoon. With the dramatic shift in the schedule, unfortunately all squads were not able to return on Monday. Ultimately, Volusia (Florida Tennis Center – Daytona Beach) earned the sectional crown on the strength of their two dominant performances from Saturday.

Captain Russell McDonald’s Volusia crew includes a complete roster of Mary Hoffman, Albert Weigel, Stacey Effner, Heather Patton, Michelle McDonald, Stephen Lucas, Brad Gifford, Jerry Boatright, Susan Hrycyk, Mike Kogelschatz, Linda Leyva, Valentino Santiago, and Saroj Kasturi.

Monday also began with the battle to advance to the semifinal stage of the 8.0 competition despite a handful of teams having to withdraw. Volusia (Florida Tennis Center – Daytona Beach) in Flight 1 and Broward (Weston Tennis Center) in Flight 3 both finished unscathed at 2-0 by taking five individual matchups compared to dropping only one. IRMSL (Buttonwood Tennis Club – Stuart) had a little bit of a tougher road to finish atop the standings in Flight 2, but still managed to do so with four court victories. Securing the wild card slot was Pinellas (Tarpon Tennis Club – Tarpon Springs), which finished second in Flight 2 after also claiming four courts in their pair of duals.

In the divisional semifinals, Broward swept aside Pinellas while IRMSL bested Volusia by a 2-1 score line. Despite the 3-0 margin, two of the three courts contested by Broward and Pinellas were decided by a match tiebreak, including Alejandro Matheus and Natasha Torres rallying back 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 at line one. IRMSL was dominant in the two matchups they managed to win, with Jason Magnan and Tanya Mikel cruising 6-1, 6-3 at the second spot to go along with Larry Shull and Cynthia DiNenna’s 6-2, 6-2 effort on court three.

The championship dual saw all three matchups end in straight sets. Matheus and Torres set the tone for their squad at the third position, giving away just three games for a straightforward 6-1, 6-2 victory. Teammates Marcos Daniel Gonzalez Tonanez and Frances Cubano came through to clinch the sectional title for Broward shortly thereafter, battling to take line one 6-2, 6-4. The IRMSL pairing of Mangan and Mikel dug deep for a 6-4, 7-6 win on court two despite the dual having already been decided.

Captained by Juan Maldonado, the entire Broward roster includes Loren Levine, Cubano, Raiza Matheus, Alejandro Matheus, Maria Lanza, Andrea Corneilssen, Torres, Noelia Diaz, Gonzalez Tonanez, Brad Staskowski, and Timothy House.
