2017 ITF Super Seniors World Individual Championships
Trio of Champions Crowned on Thursday
October 19, 2017

Action continued on Thursday at the 2017 ITF Super Seniors World Individual Championships, held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Heavy rainfall earlier in the week resulted in a major schedule change, with only a trio of finals contested on Thursday; all other finals will be played on Friday to conclude the prestigious international event.
Americans George McCabe (men’s 85) and Roz King (women’s 80) along with Canadian Muffie Grieve (women’s 85) earned individual titles on Thursday.
Third-seeded McCabe received a bye in the opening round of the men’s 85 draw, and followed that up with a quick 6-2, 6-1, victory over Claude Mory of Switzerland. His next contest pitted him against No. 8 seed Juan Valls-Vidal, where the American swept aside the Spaniard in impressive fashion 6-0, 6-1.
In the semifinal round, McCabe took on the division’s No. 1 seed, Henri Crutchet of France. McCabe won the first frame 6-4 before Crutchet made an emphatic comeback to prevail in the second 6-2. That sent the match to a decisive match tiebreak, where McCabe took control early en route to a 10 points to two triumph. His opponent in the championship was fourth seed Australian Max Byrne, who once again provided a stern challenge that McCabe was up for; McCabe took home the title with a 7-5, 6-4, win.
King was the No. 7 seed in the women’s 80 draw. She lost just a pair of games in her opening two matches before going up against top-seeded Nola Collins of Australia in the quarterfinals. In that matchup, King held a 4-2 advantage when Collins retired. King then faced off with teammate Carol Wood, where she was pushed to three sets but prevailed 6-1, 3-6, 10-5. In the championship, King defeated another American, No. 8 seed Dori Devries, by a final margin of 6-4, 6-4.
In the women’s 85 division, Grieve was not challenged until the final.
After receiving in the first round, she easily handled Doris Lutz (USA) 6-1, 6-1, and Margaret Canby (USA) 6-1, 6-2, to secure her spot in the championship match. She would be up against No. 4 seed and fellow Canadian Rosemarie Asch, who also had an easy path to the final. The matchup would feature a tense two sets, with Grieve taking the first set 6-4 before pulling out the second in a tiebreak, seven points to four.
