Monday turned into a rain-shortened opening day of the 2017 USTA Boys’ 12s National Clay Court Championships, held at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla. All first-round singles matches were completed but doubles play was halted due to weather.

 

Six of the 32 seeds were upset in the first round of the singles draw, with the biggest surprise served up by Jacob Smith (Daniel Island, S.C.), who posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over No. 8 seed Joseph Phillips (New York).

 

Other upsets included Jaxon Lamb (Greeneville, Tenn.) taking down No. 21 seed Lucas Pak (Chantilly, Va.), 6-2, 6-3, Xander Barber (Asheville, N.C.) toppling No. 22 Jason Michel (Henderson, Nev.), 6-0, 6-4, Felipe Pinzon (Weston, Fla.) outlasting No. 27 seed Pavan Uppu (Pickerington, Ohio), 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, Charlie Cowan (Oviedo, Fla.) battling past No. 30 Caden Hasler (American Fork, Utah), 6-4, 0-6, 6-3, and Soham Purohit (Kirkland, Wash.) cruising by No. 31 Rahul Sachdev (Cary, N.C.), 6-1, 6-2.

 

The weather has forced a change in Tuesday’s schedule, as the remainder of the doubles matches that were not completed will now begin at 8 a.m. Second-round main draw and first-round consolation singles matches will follow.
