Temperatures into the mid 90s, high humidity and rain gave players fits on Day 2 of the 69th USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Singles Championships at the USTA National Campus in Orlando and Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

More than 25 matches were postponed in the boys’ and girls’ 18s-16s, and seven players retired with injury or illness in the challenging conditions.

The Girls’ 18s led all divisions in upsets Sunday as four seeds went down courtesy of unseeded players Alexandra Yepifanova of Aventura, Isabella Montana of Cutler Bay, Kiana Rizzolo of Jupiter, and Abigail Rencheli of Sarasota.

The second round of the Boys’ 18s saw a rematch of last year’s Boys’ 16s final, and the result was the same as Boca Raton’s Ronan Jachuck defeated Gainesville’s Grey Cacciatore 6-0, 6-2. Grey’s brother Harry, the No. 12 seed, also made an exit 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the hands of Sarasota’s Antoine Sanchez, who is a two-time “Bobby Curtis” doubles winner.

The Boys’ 16s division lost both its top seeds Sunday as Eugene Clur of Pembroke Pines ousted No. 1 Russell Berdusco of Bradenton 6-4, 6-3, and Davie’s Thomas Lake topped No. 2 Luis Iriarte Bastidas of Weston 6-4, 6-2Thomas, a three-time “Bobby Curtis” doubles winner, and his father Andy, a career winner of more than 30 USTA Gold Balls, last year won the USTA National Father-Son Grass Court Championships.
