USTA Florida August Level 5 Championships
Day One
August 5, 2017

Saturday was cut short at the 2017 USTA Florida August Level 5 Championships, as heavy rainfall and lightning settled over the National Campus in the late afternoon, suspending play for the day. Each of the eight draws completed one round while the Boys’ 12s division was able to get through to the quarterfinals prior to the weather moving in.
The Boys’ 12s draw was notable on day one for another reason, as it was the only draw to see the eight seeds go undefeated on the first day. Combined, the seeded players lost just one set over the two rounds of play, as No. 4 Francisco Montana survived Caleb Domkowski 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4.
In the Boys’ 14s, only the opening round of matches was completed. The only surprised result to be turned in came from Samuel Frizelle, who took down third-seeded Luis Fernandez 7-6(0), 6-2. The Boys’ 16s sit in a similar position, as only one seed has fallen while the first round is in the books – Sami Ozzor upset No. 7 Dante Russo 6-3, 6-2.
Mixed results have been scattered throughout the Boys’ 18s division, as some players were able to safely reach the quarterfinals on Saturday while some second round matches were halted. The Nos. 1, 4, 7 and 8 seeds have all advanced to the quarterfinals. On the other hand, No. 3 Brian Pham was stunned by Sebastien Flores 6-2, 6-3 in the first round while Greyson Doscotch fought past No. 2 Quinn Fender 6-1, 1-6, 10-3 to book his spot in the last eight.
For the Girls’ 12s draw, just the opening round was fully completed while all second round matches were on court when the day’s slate was cut short. The only seed to fall so far was the third seed Elizabeth Lavin, who was forced to retire trailing 6-2, 5-4 against Nadia Rodewald.
By far the most intriguing division on Saturday was the Girls’ 14s, which shockingly lost six of its eight seeds in the first round of action. Just No. 3 seed Alyssa Perdomo (safely into the quarterfinals) and fourth-seeded Katie Heller (still to play her second round match) remain alive in the main draw.
The Girls’ 16s has held true to form so far save for No. 4 seed Paris Hudson retiring after dropping five of the six game she contested versus Amber Crutchfield. No. 3 seed Lindsey Zieglar was also forced to retire in the Girls’ 18s, while seventh-seeded Caraline Scheufler withdrew prior to taking the court. Bin Zheng knocked made it a trio of seeds defeated in the opening round after she produced a 6-3, 6-0 score line over No. 4 seed Selin Yaylali.
