August 6, 2017

A busy day two at the 2017 USTA Florida August Level 5 Championships whittled the Boys’ 12s draw down to the final while all other draws are at the semifinal stage heading into Monday.

Having been the only division to complete two rounds on the opening day, the Boys’ 12s contested its quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Sunday. With all eight seeds still in the main draw there figured to be some tight score lines, but all four quarterfinals ended in straight sets. In the semifinals, No. 3 seed Yubel Ubri took down top seed Alex Di Staulo 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 in the only match that went the distance in the division. Ubri will face No. 6 seed Oumar Diallo in the final, who got past No. 2 Chase Healey 6-4, 6-3.

The Boys’ 14s semifinals will feature the top two seeds along with a pair of unseeded competitors. No. 1 seed Mateo Mendoza narrowly escaped being upset in the second round before posting an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over sixth-seeded Ryan Rajakar. Next up is Yair Gritzman after he upset the No. 7 seed in the second round and No. 4 seed in the quarterfinals, both in straight sets. In the other half of the draw, Samuel Frizelle will look to continue his run by upsetting second seed William Mroz after neither player lost a set on Sunday.

It will be a similar situation in the Boys’ 16s draw, where a pair of seeded versus unseeded player matchups make up the semifinals. No. 6 Nicolas Cabrera and Colin Tavares will do battle after Cabrera beat top seed David Burns and Tavares breezed past No. 8 Gabriel Diaz. John Ziolo, who upset No. 3 seed Andy Mackler 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 in the quarterfinals, meets second-seeded Carter Morgan, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Top seed Alex Guzvha remains in the hunt for the Boys’ 18s title, surrendering a total of nine games along the way. Guzvha next faces No. 8 seed Subhash Pottipati in one semifinal, while No. 7 seed Victor Stoyanov and unseeded Hunter Robbins will clash in the other on Monday morning.

Three of the top four seeds have made their way to the semifinals in the Girls’ 12s division while all four to reach the semifinals have been dominant. No. 1 seed Lilly Pleasant has lost only eight games so far, posting four set victories by the score of 6-1. Pleasant meets No. 8 seed Regina Alcobe-Garibay, who has won a pair of sets 6-0 in the tournament.  The bottom half of the draw features fourth-seeded Ava Schueller and No. 2 seed Isabella Rojas Rigoris, with both players giving away a mere four games in three matches.

Just two seeds got past the opening round in the Girls’ 14s, and they both find themselves in the semifinals on Monday morning. Third seed Alyssa Perdomo will take on Paradise Traub after Traub outlasted Blanka DeMicheli 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 in the quarterfinals. No. 4 seed Katie Heller came through a tough quarterfinal as well, defeating Mia Slama 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. Heller’s next opponent is Maria Markosov, who was impressive on Sunday after securing an upset of No. 2 seed Compassion Tsai 7-6(6), 7-6(5) on Saturday.

Victoria-Jacynthe Oppel has not lost a set so far in her quest to take the Girls’ 16s crown as an unseeded player. She and No. 5 seed Samantha Maras will compete in one semifinal while No. 7 seed Emily Javedan and No. 8 seed Hope Moulin will meet in the other.

In the Girls’ 18s division, fifth-seeded Nikki Yanez secured a semifinal spot with her 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 victory over No. 1 seed Viva Laas in the quarterfinals. Yanez and unseeded Danna Taylor are set to square off on Monday. Another unseeded player, Abigail Rencheli, has not lost a set in reaching the semifinals. Her opponent, No. 6 seed Isabella Montana, toughed out a 1-6, 7-6(6), 10-6 quarterfinal triumph over No. 2 seed Kristina Zieglar.

Main draw semifinal matches will get Monday’s action started at 8:00 am. For updated draws and match times, click here.
