Play continued on Sunday at the 2017 USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior 12s/14s Doubles Championships, hosted by the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The boys’ and girls’ 12s and 14s main draws were whittled down to the championship round while both mixed doubles draws will see their semifinals and finals contested on Monday.

It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the boys’ 12s title match, with the two duos taking very different paths to reach the championship. Top seeds Julian Alonso and Andres Wolf did not drop a set in their three matches, only being pushed past 6-4 once. Meanwhile the second-seeded pair of Andre Medicielo and Hunter Nussbaum needed to pull out back-to-back match tiebreaks to reach the semifinals before cruising in that matchup in straight sets.

The final of the boys’ 14s will also feature the draw’s top two seeds. No. 1 seeds Adam Duan and Solomon Giles along with No. 2 seeds Peter Anastasakis and Yannik Rahman were on cruise control until the semifinals, as each tandem had given up a mere 11 games in three matches. Duan and Giles faced a stern test from the seventh seeds Nicolas and Felipe Pinzon; however, the No. 1 seeds battled their way to victory, 6-4, 7-5. Anastasakis and Rahman claimed the opening set from No. 8 seeds Robert Beautelus and Luis Fernandez 7-5 but quickly saw the second frame get away, dropping it 6-1. That left the result up to a decisive match tiebreak, where the second-seeded team won a back-and-forth affair, 10 points to eight.

One of the more dominant pairs of the entire tournament has been Emily Barua and Cameron Didion, seeded second in the girls’ 12s competition. Absolutely dominating their opponents, Barua and Didion have recorded four 6-0 sets, included an impressive 6-0, 6-0 sweep of No. 5 seeds Gabriella Goyins and Jessica Maras in the semifinals. Their championship opponent will be third seeds Mary Boyce Deatherage and Nyjah Head after they pulled off an impressive semifinal upset of the draw’s No. 1 seeds, Chelsea Bluestein and Lilly Pleasant, 6-4, 6-4.

Top seeds DJ Bennett and Didi Bredberg Canizares will compete for the girls’ 14s title on Monday. They were pushed to the limit by No. 3 seeds Katie Heller and Lara Smejkal, but came through that semifinal showdown 7-6(1), 2-6, 10-8. Across the net from the No. 1 seeds will be unseeded hopefuls Cecilia Alcobe-Garibay and Ada Jane de Alcantara. The upstart duo has already taken down the division’s No. 2 and No. 4 seeds to advance to the championship match.

In the 12s division of the mixed doubles, the top-seeded team of Regina Alcobe-Garibay and Pierce Garbett will be up against No. 3 seeds Nyjah Head and Charlie Spencer in one semifinal. The other will pit No. 6 seeds Jordan Fenton and Benjamin Willwerth versus seventh seeds Benjamin Kreynes and Blake Rothchild. Fenton and Willwerth picked up a straight sets victory over fourth seeds Mary Boyce Deatherage and Daniel Schaffer in the quarterfinals while Kreynes and Rothchild breezed through No. 2 seeds Timothy and Lilly Pleasant 6-4, 6-3.

The top four seeds are all that remains in the 14s division of the mixed doubles. No. 1 seeds DJ Bennett and Solomon Giles, No. 2 seeds Yair Gritzman and Lara Smejkal, and No. 4 seeds Natalie Block and Jeremy Friedland have yet to surrender a set. The third-seeded pair of Brooke Dugarte and Ty Rothchild were extended to a match tiebreak in their quarterfinal victory. In semifinal matches are Bennett and Giles vs. Block and Friedland along with Gritzman and Smejkal facing Dugarte and Rothchild.

Monday’s slate of matches is set for an 8:00 a.m. start. Complete draws and results from the 2017 USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior 12s/14s Doubles Championships can be found here.
