One of two sites in action on the opening weekend of the 2018 USTA League National Adult slate, the USTA National Campus welcomes the nation’s best teams in the Adult 18 & Over 5.0+ division this weekend. First matches get underway Friday, Oct. 5 and will conclude the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 7.

In a change to this year’s format, teams will compete in a total of four unflighted matches against randomly selected opponents. Every team will play two dual matches on Friday and two more on Saturday. On Sunday, the top four teams (based on TennisLink standings) will advance to the semifinals with the championship and third-place matches to follow.

On the men’s side, all USTA Sections are represented other than Hawaii Pacific in the 16-team competition. With just 14 women’s squads entered, the Sections not in contention for the national title are Caribbean, Hawaii Pacific and Northern.

Each team dual match will feature one line of singles and two lines of doubles. A squad must claim at least two of those three courts to earn a dual victory.

Play begins at 7 a.m. on each of the three days.

At the 2017 Championships, the Intermountain (Centennial, Colo.) men bested Southern (Atlanta, Ga.) by a 2-1 margin to secure the national title while Mid-Atlantic (Bethesda, Md.) held off Texas (Frisco) by the same score line for third. On the women’s side, Texas (Houston) prevailed 2-1 over Missouri Valley (Tulsa, Okla.) for the team crown; Southern (Nashville) defeated Mid-Atlantic (Glenallen, Va.) 2-1 to finish third.

Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 players in a few parts of the country in its first year to more than 900,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.

USTA League was established to provide adult recreational players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 sections. The league groups players by using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced). USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.
