2019 USTA Boys' 12s National Clay Court Championships
Down to the Round of 16
July 16, 2019

Day three of the 2019 USTA Boys’ 12s National Clay Court Championships, presented by adidas, wrapped up Tuesday afternoon. Both the singles and doubles main draws are now at the round of 16 stage heading into the second half of the event.
On the first day seeded players could face off against each other, it was a bit of an unexpected occurrence to have zero matches in the main draw extended to a third set. The most games a winner dropped were eight, as No. 13 Braeden Gelletich (Goshen, N.Y.) defeated No. 17 Ronit Karki (East Brunswick, N.J.) 7-5, 6-3.
Additionally, just one unseeded competitor remains in the hunt for the coveted title with Jacobus Smit (Fort Mill, S.C.) scoring his second upset of the tournament, this time taking down No. 10 Yubel Ubri (Miami Beach, Fla.) 6-3, 6-3. Two other players outside the top 32 began the day still in the main draw, but Ilija Palavestra (Delray Beach, Fla.) fell to No. 12 Maximus Dussault (Leesburg, Va.) 6-0, 6-4 and Rama Subodh Pottipati (Boca Raton, Fla.) came up short versus No. 6 Cassius Chinlund (Los Angeles) by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.
Having lost a mere two games in his opening two rounds of action, top seed Cooper Woestendick (Olathe, Kan.) was pushed in the first set by No. 17 Jimin Jung (Cary, N.C.) before prevailing 6-4, 6-2. Second-seeded Maxwell Exsted (Savage, Minn.) turned in another solid effort in besting No. 17 Ronan O’Dwyer (Fishers, N.Y.) 6-3, 6-3, while No. 3 Abhishek Thorat (Lithia, Fla.) eased past No. 17 Ian Mayew (Cary, N.C.) 6-1, 6-3. Fourth seed Abhinav Chunduru (Plano, Texas) handled No. 10 and recent USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” singles champion Zach Friedland (Hollywood, Fla.) 6-3, 6-1.
Not all doubles teams were in action on the day, as only the matches carried over from Monday were contested. Included in those results was the upset of the No. 7 seeds Nicolas Iantosca (New York) and Dominick Mosejczuk (East Elmhurst, N.Y.), who were edged out by Andrew Li (San Diego) and Dylan Long (Carmel, Ind.) 7-6(8), 7-6(6). The ninth-seeded tandem of Aryan Badlani (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.) and Karki were also taken out by the unseeded pairing of Ibrahim Carrington (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) and Palavestra 6-1, 6-2. Seven of the top eight duos have advanced to the round of 16.
Wednesday’s slate of matches, which is set to feature two rounds of doubles, gets underway at 8 a.m. For complete results and upcoming match times from the 2019 USTA Boys’ 12s National Clay Court Championships, click here.
