The final day of the 2019 USTA Florida Mixed 18 & Over 6.0/8.0/10.0 Sectional Championships was completed Monday afternoon at the USTA National Campus. Highlighting the action were the 6.0 Brevard (Viera Regional Park) and 8.0 Broward (City of Oakland Park) squads being crowned sectional champions, joining the 10.0 team representing the National Campus.

The 6.0 championship dual wrapped up quickly, as all three courts were completed in straight sets. Brevard’s Donna Paternoster and Michael Chen had the tightest match, yet they only dropped four games in coming through at line three 6-1, 6-3. Agatha Alesson and Mike Tichacek responded for Broward (Frank Veltri Tennis Center – Plantation) in the form of a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the second spot. However, there was little drama in the closing moments, as Nicole Bertran and Lester Lopez of Brevard claimed line one 6-1, 6-2.

Captained by Heather Harris, the full Brevard roster includes Kim Carroll, Jamey Carroll, Chen, Omar Meguid, Brooke Boss, Evelyn Dobson, Paternoster, Lopez, Bertran, Gustavo Toledo, Natalie Decker, Nick George, Jennifer Ellingson, Martin Rojas, and Vincent Vo.

In the 8.0 semifinals, Broward (City of Oakland Park) swept aside Okaloosa/Walton/Bay (Shalimar Pointe Country Club) 3-0 and SMD (Ron Ehmann Tennis Center – Miami) took down Hillsborough (HCC Tennis Complex – Tampa). Broward seized control early, losing just three games in taking the opening frames on all three courts. Erin Pasternack and Michael Stites would end up not surrendering even one game in a 6-0, 6-0 effort at the third position. Caroline Rinehart and Patricio Casali battled their way to a 6-1, 7-6 victory on court one, while Loren Levine and Agustin Crochi Torres hung on for a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 victory at line two. For SMD, it was straight-set triumphs at the top two spots that propelled them into the divisional final. Alejandra Siller and Antonio Necuze turned in a comprehensive 6-3, 6-1 victory on court one to go along with Beth Pritchett and Andres Lozano toughing out the matchup at line two 7-5, 6-4.

The showdown between Broward and SMD could not have been closer, as each team would end up with 29 games won overall. SMD’s Siller and Necuze got their squad on the board thanks to earning court two 6-4, 6-3, while the other two contests were decided by match tiebreaks. Ultimately, the toughness of Broward would prevail. After not competing in the semifinals, Karen Williams and Anthony Phillips took the court at line one, narrowly edging out their opponents from SMD 6-1, 4-6, 1-0. Court three was even more of a tossup. Levine and Crochi Torres put themselves in front by claiming the opening frame, only to see Pritchett and Lozano rally back. With the sectional title on the line, Levine and Crochi Torres delivered for Broward 6-4, 4-6, 1-0.

Along with captain Kevin Sims, Broward’s team also features Phillips, Stites, Marcus Pfenninger, Gaurav Hingorani, Eliu Montero, Caprice Thomas, Williams, Frances Cubano, Juan Maldonado, Virna Trujillo, Crochi Torres, Brooke Oransky, Marie Ferrigno, Jill Cady, Levine, Reinhart, Alex Barlow, Patricio Casali, and Humphrey Allen.
