Broward Heading to Indian Wells
January 27, 2020

The USTA Florida Tri-Level Sectional Championships concluded Monday afternoon, crowning its final three team champions on the third day of the event.
Winning squads included the Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston) 3.0/3.5/4.0 men, the Escambia (Independent) 3.0/3.5/4.0 women, and the Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston) 3.5/4.0/4.5 women. They joined Sunday’s trio of champions – Duval (San Jose Country Club – Jacksonville) in the women’s 2.5/3.0/3.5 division, Sarasota (Landings Racquet Club – Sarasota) in the women’s 4.0/4.5/5.0 division, and Broward (Dillon Tennis Center – Oakland Park) in the men’s 3.5/4.0/4.5 division.
While a total of six sectional crowns were on the line at the event, the headliners were the men’s and women’s 3.5/4.0/4.5 competitions; the two squads prevailing from that division have booked their spot in the 2020 BNP Paribas Open Tri-Level Championships March 20-22. The Sunshine State will be represented by the Broward (Dillon Tennis Center – Oakland Park) men and the Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston) women.
Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston) capped off an undefeated run to the men’s 3.0/3.5/4.0 title with an emphatic 3-0 sweep of Marion (Country Club of Ocala). The clash of undefeated squads quickly turned into a rout when Broward took the opening frames at lines one and three easily. Nick Boros and Alejandro Arraiz raced to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top spot; teammates Carlos Alesson and Reinaldo Marquez closed out court three 6-3, 6-2. The sweep was finished off by Juan Pablo Rincon and Pietro Lopriore, who rallied back at the second position for a 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 result. Captained by Jorge Prado, the Broward roster is made up of Saeid Sadoughi, Rincon, Arraiz, Boros, Alesson, Jeffrey Sturman, Lopriore, Marquez, and Carlos Haupt.
For the women’s 3.0/3.5/4.0 semifinals, Escambia (Independent) held off Marion (Fort King Tennis Center – Ocala) by a 2-1 margin and wild card club Orange/Seminole (USTA National Campus – Orlando) brushed aside SMD (Founders Park Tennis – Islamorada) 3-0. Escambia got a straight-set effort from Anna Del Gallo and Sue Nast at line three coupled with a marathon 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 comeback by Shellie McCall and Wendy Hart on court one. Orange/Seminole prevailed in straight sets in all three matchups; Alisa Wolfe and Lisa Miller won line two 6-4, 6-3, which was the exact same score line turned in by Kathleen Sipio and Cheryl Tolentino-Bernabe from the third position. Jamie Alamia and Genell Ferrell hung on at line one 7-5, 6-3.
In the final, Escambia toughed out two tightly-contested opening sets before running away with the second and third positions for a 2-1 triumph. Darlene Warner and Jeanie Ephron prevailed 7-6, 6-2 at line two to go along with Del Gallo and Nast coming through again at line three, this time by a 7-5, 6-1 margin. Alamia and Ferrell staved off the sweep with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the top spot.
Captain Gina Bevino’s full Escambia roster features Tonya Del Gallo, Virginia Graybiel, Karen Penn, Warner, Heather Ondra, Jacqueline Wallace, McCall, Nast, Anna Del Gallo, Jennifer Ghiorso, Hunter Strobel, Ephron, Hart, Retsy Wilson, Debbie Cook, and Tami Manning.
The victors in the women’s 3.5/4.0/4.5 semifinals duals were Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston) and wild card entrant Orange/Seminole (USTA National Campus – Orlando), each advancing by a slim 2-1 final result. Broward defeated Alachua (DB Racquet Club – Gainesville) with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win from Rosamaria Rodriguez and Natalia Moll at line one plus a stunning 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 comeback by Lorena Villar Seminario de Guzman-Barron and Cindy Conine on court two. For Orange/Seminole, Desirae McLaughlin and Kyrsten Crociata earned line two 6-4, 6-1 while Alvida Groom and Jenna Richardson battled to take the third position 6-3, 6-4 over Brevard (McKnight Family Sports Complex – Rockledge).
While the championship dual featured three straight-set matches, they were all tightly-contested affairs. However, in the end Broward proved much too tough, putting together a 3-0 win over Orange/Seminole. Villar Seminario de Guzman-Barron and Conine dropped the fewest games in taking line two 6-4, 6-3. Sarah Nickoson and Maria Suarez fought their way to a 6-4, 7-5 victory at the third position, while Rodriguez and Laura Di Lauro battled to a 7-6, 7-5 result at the top spot.
Led by captain Maria Vegas de Pardo, the Broward crew includes Taciana Kalili, Moll, Liz Sobel, Nickoson, Liliana Albrecht, Patricia Williams, Clarena Furtado, Suarez, Ivy Touchstone, Rosana Pereira, Conine, Rodriguez, Villar Seminario de Guzman-Barron, Barbara Barrios, Di Lauro, and Monica Candamo.
