2021 USTA FL Level 6 USTA National Campus Spring Jamboree
Busy First Day of Play
March 28, 2021

It was a busy opening day of action at the USTA Florida Level 6 USTA National Campus Spring Jamboree, as matches filled up the courts for nearly 12 hours.
Only one upset took place in the trio of boys’ 12s draws over the course of Saturday, as Matvey Winfrey (Deland) won his opening round match before impressively dismissing top-seeded Evan Rodenberg (Tallahassee) 6-1, 6-1 to move into the semifinals of the Blue Draw. The two other No. 1 seeds were challenged but ultimately prevailed, with Madison Huffman (Moultrie, Ga.) rallying past Will Ford (Orlando) 3-6, 7-5, 10-3 in the Red Draw and Eston Akins winning the battle of Orlando residents against Andrew Gomez 6-2, 0-6, 10-8 in the Green Draw.
In boys’ 14s action, Blue Draw No. 1 seed Mark Mrcela (Wesley Chapel) was solid in his lone contest of the day, getting by Ianko Abreu Diaz (Orlando) 6-0, 6-4. Meanwhile, Morgan Bucaille (Wesley Chapel) was the beneficiary of a walkover in his matchup with second seed Colin Hui (Syosset, N.Y.). For the Red Draw, Tyler Lewis (Ormond Beach) scored a comeback upset over No. 1 Farley Nunnelley (Mountain Brook, Ala.) 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 and No. 2 Adam Stochel Polubiec (Palm Coast) bested Kalyan Satti (Wayne, Pa.) 6-0, 6-3.
The two seeded competitors of the boys’ 16s Blue Draw had vastly different experiences on day one of the event. Top seed Taylor Huffman (Moultrie, Ga.) could come up with no answers in his 6-1, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Imani Beharry (Saint Cloud); for No. 2 Caleb Domkowski (Indian Harbour Beach), he swept aside Evan Sheffield (Orlando) by the same score line. The Red Draw saw No. 1 Leo Kwetkus (Ormond Beach) get eliminated 6-3, 6-1 by Valentino Laurato (Tampa) in the semifinals and second seed Anthony Gomez (Orlando) beat Jan Negron (Orlando) 6-2, 6-2 to reach the final.
Kahaka’ioikamalie Companion (Saint Cloud) and James Kober (Davenport) appear to be on a collision course in the boys’ 18s division; top-seeded Companion ousted David Perkins (Lynchburg, Va.) 6-1, 6-1 while Kober defeated Khushal Mehta (Rockledge) 6-2, 6-3.
Girls’ 12s No. 1 seed Natalie Augustyn (Palm Beach Gardens) got her weekend off to a solid start by turning in a 6-4, 6-1 effort against Emily Sammons (Ponte Vedra). No. 2 seed Aurionna Wisniewski (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) was not as fortunate, coming up short by a 6-3, 6-0 margin versus Kaylee Munson (Jacksonville Beach).
Campbell Bundza (Port Orange) and Mia Muniz (Orlando) both came through with straight-set victories to kick off play as the two seeds in the girls’ 14s Red Draw. Bundza dropped just four games in beating Ella Hovan (Melbourne) 6-3, 6-1 while Muniz held off Alexandra Wright (Melbourne) 6-1, 6-4. For the Blue Draw, No. 1 Holland Harris (Orlando) breezed past Sharanya Natarajan (Melbourne) 6-1, 6-2 and Willa Polen (Orlando) scored a 6-3, 6-4 upset of No. 2 Jordyn Gomez (Orlando).
In one of the best matches on the day, top-seeded Ayden Kujawa (Clarksville, Tenn.) was edged out by Maria Layrisse (Tampa) 5-7, 6-4, 12-10 in the quarterfinals of the girls’ 16s Blue Draw. Second seed Venus Pereda (Tampa) also faced a stiff challenge, but she managed to prevail 7-5, 6-4 over Isabella De Luise (Brambleton, Va.). Red Draw top seed Martine Sundsten (Orlando) looked determined in her first match of the weekend, a 6-1, 6-0 effort against Mia Dickey (Sarasota); meanwhile, No. 2 Deiya Pandya (Jacksonville) was relegated to the consolation draw after a 6-3, 6-2 defeat by Ana Varas (Orlando).
Girls’ 18s No. 1 seed Madison Molock (Ocala) barely broke a sweat even on a warm Saturday in Orlando after she received a walkover to start the day before ousting Julia Longpre (Bradenton) 6-1, 6-1. Molock will be up against unseeded Alyssa Rodriguez (Tampa), who prevailed in a marathon 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 contest with No. 2 Noelle DAngelillo (Orlando), in the divisional final.
