One of the first matches on court Sunday morning, Vince Zaliauskas (Cape Coral, Fla.) toughed out a 4-3(5-4), 4-3(5-2) victory over Bill Cordes (Saint Cloud, Fla.) to advance to the men’s 3.0 final. Ozzie Dias (Lauderdale By The Sea, Fla.) had already booked his place in the championship with a 4-0, 4-0 sweep, and he was just as impressive in downing Zaliauskas 4-1, 4-0 to capture the divisional crown.
It was a busy day in the men’s 3.5 competition, where all three playoff rounds had to be completed. At the quarterfinal stage, James Avallone (Smithtown, N.Y.) outlasted Heng Liu (Bellevue, Wash.) 4-2, 2-4, 4-3 while Aaron Prince (Gold River, Calif.) defeated Mark Elderkin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) 4-3, 4-2 in the top half of the draw. The bottom half saw Chris Carlton (Hagerstown, Md.) get by Luiz Payne (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) 4-3, 4-2 and Daniel Knox (Raleigh) survive a sluggish start to overcome Matthew Kerr (Melbourne, Fla.) 0-4, 4-0, 4-0.
An injury was the unfortunate demise of Avallone, who was forced to retire trailing 2-1 versus Prince. Meanwhile Carlton came through with another solid 4-3, 4-2 win, this time over Knox. In the final, Carlton raced through the opening frame without surrendering a game before putting away Prince 4-0, 4-2.
The men’s 4.0 division was at the semifinal stage as the last day of the event got underway. John Reichel (Naples, Fla.) strung together his third consecutive victory with a solid 4-1, 4-2 showing against Volker Mai (Gainesville) and Matt Bartell (Chanhassen, Minn.) dismissed Robert Bieniek (Kildeer, Ill.) 4-3, 4-0. Bartell grabbed control immediately in the championship dual, never letting Reichel fight his way into the match; Bartell would go on to prevail 4-0, 4-1.
A total of three men’s 4.5 matches were included on the day’s schedule. In the semifinals, Rob Strasberg (La Jolla, Calif.) defeated Brant Benun (Agoura Hills, Calif.) 4-3, 4-2 to go along with Robert Golsmith (Novelty, Ohio) besting Christopher Brock (Erlanger, Ky.) 4-2, 4-3. The final would be perhaps the match of the day, with Strasberg coming out on top in a back-and-forth affair by a 4-2, 2-4, 4-3 score line.
In the women’s 3.0 division, Jennie Parker (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Carolyn Moore (Milton, Fla.) delivered victories in the semifinals to set up their clash with the title on the line; Parker cruised past Lori McDevitt (Rocklin, Calif.) 4-1, 4-1 while Moore beat Sallie LaChance (Worcester, Mass.) by a 4-2, 4-3 margin. Ultimately, Moore would prove too tough for Parker, as she triumphed 4-0, 4-2 to capture the divisional crown.
Coretta Wilson (Charlotte) and Trish Arreazola (Janesville, Wis.) started off the women’ 3.5 action with victories in the semifinal round, as Wilson won 4-3, 4-1 over Laurel Smith (Sunset, S.C.) and Arreazola battled past Kathy Myers (Saint Cloud, Fla.) 4-1, 4-3(5-2). In the final, momentum quickly went to the side of Arreazola, who took the first set 4-1; she managed to hold off Wilson 4-3 in the second to clinch the win.
One of the tightest matches of the day took place in the women’s 4.0 semifinals, where Valerie de Crecy (Gainesville, Fla.) staved off elimination before rallying past Debbie Dawson (Tampa, Fla.) 3-4, 4-3, 4-2. It was a much smoother path to the final for Cecilia Collins (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) thanks to her 4-1, 4-2 effort against Loralie Liggett (Brentwood, Tenn.). Collins would back up that victory with a comprehensive 4-1, 4-1 triumph over de Crecy in the championship matchup.
In the lone women’s 4.5 contest, Jami Patterson (Brazil, Ind.) defeated Denise Krupa (Boerne, Texas) in straight sets 4-3, 4-3 thanks to coming through in a pair of tiebreaks.
