2018 USTA League National Adult 18 & Over 2.5/3.5 Championships
Divisions Take Shape Heading into Saturday
October 12, 2018
Day one of the USTA League National Adult 18 & Over 2.5/3.5 Championships wrapped up Friday evening at the USTA National Campus. All teams competed in two dual matches in a fight to finish in the top four to qualify for the semifinals.
Five teams are left unbeaten in each division heading into Saturday. The Florida and Pacific Northwest Sections enjoyed the most success to kick off the event, as all three of their squads are currently 2-0, while Caribbean and Intermountain had a pair of teams move atop their respective divisional standings.
In the women’s 2.5 competition, Pacific Northwest (Robinswood Tennis Center – Bellevue, Wash.) and Caribbean (Puerto Rico) were on cruise control. Pacific Northwest did not surrender a set while dropping 17 games; Caribbean gave away one set while losing a mere 15 games. Florida (Deerwood Country Club – Jacksonville, Fla.) was the third team to win all six individual matchups on Friday behind three sets and 46 games lost. Midwest (Midtown Athletic Club – Bannockburn, Ill.) and New England (Weston Racquet Club – Weston, Conn.) are also undefeated after claiming five of the six courts they contested, while seven other squads are still in the mix after going 1-1 to kick off play.
Intermountain and (Golds Gym – Orem, Utah) Florida (USTA National Campus – Orlando) find themselves tied at the top of the men’s 3.5 division following 9-1 efforts in the 10 individual matchups that made up their two dual matches. It was Intermountain coming through with a slightly more comprehensive performance, sacrificing fewer sets (two versus four) and games (40 compared to 60). Pacific Northwest (Mill Creek Tennis Club – Mill Creek, Wash.) and Southern (Stillwater – Flowery Branch, Ga.) finished with eight court wins to power their way to 2-0 overall records, while Northern California (Independent) collected seven to also stay unscathed after day one. Also looking to make a move on Saturday are six teams with 1-1 records.
The women’s 3.5 Intermountain (Independent) also had a strong showing Friday as one of four squads to close out action with two dual victories thanks to seven court wins. Caribbean (Puerto Rico), Florida (Red Bug Lake Park – Casselberry), and Middle States (Springton Tennis and Racquet Club – Newtown Square, Pa.) all join Intermountain, while Pacific Northwest (Tennis Center Sand Point – Seattle) grabbed one fewer individual matchup while also going undefeated. Additionally, a group of seven teams are lurking at 1-1, far from out of the semifinal conversation.

Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 players in a few parts of the country in its first year to more than 900,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
USTA League was established to provide adult recreational players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 sections. The league groups players by using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced). USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.
