Rain finally forced play at the 2020 ITF W25 Orlando indoors at the USTA National Campus, as the first round of both the singles and doubles main draws were completed on a busy Thursday. In total, eight Americans found their way into the second round in singles action.

Four contests saw Americans across the net from each other, including Hanna Chang completing her 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Katie Volynets; Chang came into the day trailing 0-6, 5-4. Wild card Alexandra Yepifanova got the best of qualifier Jessica Failla 6-4, 6-2 after Failla took the top spot in the draw as a result of top seed Anna Kalinskaya (Russia) withdrawing from the event. Additionally, Grace Min handled Katerina Stewart 6-3, 6-1 while wild card Peyton Stearns defeated lucky loser Jessica Livianu 6-3, 6-2.

Other American competitors advancing on Thursday were Hurricane Tyra Black, who took down Vivian Heisen (Germany) 6-4, 6-1 in a battle of qualifiers, Jamie Loeb, who completed her upset of No. 8 Gabriela Ce (Brazil) by a 6-1, 6-4 margin, Claire Liu, thanks to a solid 6-3, 7-6(6) effort over Conny Perrin (Switzerland), and qualifier Alycia Parks, who impressed with a 6-1, 6-3 win against seventh-seeded Kyoka Okamura of Japan.

No. 2 seed Katarzyna Kawa (Poland), the highest-ranked player in the draw, turned in a comprehensive 6-2, 6-4 victory over Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-2, 6-4 and third seed Kristina Kucova (Slovakia) outlasted American qualifier Ashley Lahey 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Another qualifier, Katarina Jokic of Serbia, upset No. 5 seed Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (Colombia) 6-3, 6-4 while sixth-seeded Chihiro Muramatsu of Japan was stunned by Tessah Andrianjafitrimo (France) 6-2, 6-1. Argentinian Paula Ormaechea let her early lead slip away versus Panna Udvardy of Hungary before rallying 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 and qualifier Victoria Rodriguez (Mexico) knocked out American wild card Elizabeth Mandlik 6-4, 6-3.

Upsets highlighted the day on the doubles side, as three of the four seeded teams came up short in the opening round. No. 1 seeds Heisen and Kveta Peschke (Czech Republic) fell 6-3, 6-4 to Ariana Arseneault (Canada) and Anna Hertel (Poland) while an all-American matchup saw Sophie Chang and Alexandra Mueller score a 7-6(5), 2-6 10-2 result over the third-seeded pairing of Ingrid Neel and Caitlin Whoriskey.

In the bottom half of the draw it was the wild card team of Americans Sarah Hamner and Ashlyn Krueger ousting No. 4 seeds Ce and Ankita Raina (India) 6-7(3), 6-1, 11-9. The second seeds Loeb and Erin Routliffe (New Zealand) did manage to move into the quarterfinals, dropping just four games to the American tandem of Mandlik and Maria Mateas.
