Excellence Teams bring talent
to the National Campus
June 28, 2017
This week, the USTA National Campus and USTA Player Development are hosting a camp for National Junior Tennis & Learning Excellence Team members from around the country. The event is being held in conjunction with the USTA Foundation, the national charitable arm of the USTA, which raises money to support NJTL programs.
NJTL is a nationwide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. NJTL chapters work with under-resourced youth who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play tennis, all while instilling the values of leadership and academic excellence.
The primary purpose of this week's camp is to provide under-resourced, national-level players – players who excel on the court but who, due to a lack of funding and opportunity, have had limited chances to gain top-level training – the opportunity to work with USTA Player Development staff. In addition, a coach from each NJTL chapter represented has been invited to attend the camp and participate in interactive coaching education programming during his or her stay.
The camp consists of 24 players: six boys and six girls in the 12s and 14s age divisions. The players have participated in a number of on- and off-court activities, highlighted by a round-robin style competition. The camp will conclude Thursday, after which select participants will be awarded wild cards to the USTA National Clay Court Championships in July.
