2018 USTA National Campus UTR Summer Jam Level 7
Final Day in the Books
July 1, 2018

A steamy, sunny Sunday was the setting for the conclusion of the 2018 USTA National Campus UTR Summer Jam Level 7, one of approximately 20 USTA Florida sanctioned Level 6-7 junior events in the second half of 2018 to pilot Universal Tennis Ratings.
When the dust settled, only two No. 1 seeds came away with titles. In the boys’ 14s Federer Flight, Caleb Domkowski (Indian Harbour Beach) won his first two match without conceding a single game before handling unseeded Rafael Ignacio Rosas Garcia (Fort Myers) by the margin of 6-4, 6-1 in the final. Gainesville native Howard Williams was almost as dominant in the 18s division. On Sunday, Williams cruised past third-seeded Krish Talati (Orange City) 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals and held off No. 2 Conner Bright (Lakeland) 6-3, 6-1 for the championship victory.
In other boys’ 14s action, unseeded Ivan Urbanovich (Winter Garden) claimed the Isner Flight thanks to a comprehensive 6-2, 6-3 result over second seed Harrison Schwartzburg (Ocala) and Alejandro Barba-Toba outlasted Dario Miguel Orozco Yanez 6-0, 6-7, 10-7 in a battle of training partners from Guanajuato, Mexico, for the Tiafoe Flight crown. Leo Kwetkus (Ormond Beach) capped off the weekend with a 3-1 record, the best in the round-robin Nadal Flight.
The two girls’ 14s draws featured vastly different finals, as No. 1 seed Jocelyn Mery (Lake Mary) was up against No. 2 seed Fiona Smirl (Delray Beach) for the Madison Flight while unseeded competitors Madelyn Martin (Saint Johns) and Sofia Ferrer (Orlando) squared off in the Sloane Flight. Smirl closed out her tournament in fine fashion, dispatching Mery quickly 6-2, 6-2; Martin hung on to win a tight first frame, 7-5, versus Ferrer and closed it out in the second, 6-2.
Both girls’ 18s seeds had their eyes on a title going into Sunday, but both were derailed in the semifinals. Top seed Sandra Swiderski (Wesley Chapel) was put away by Jasmine Cortez (Port Saint Lucie) 6-3, 6-3 and No. 2 seed Holly Hunter (Winter Haven) came up just short against Neleah Neiberline (Lakeland) 6-3, 6-7, 10-5. Cortez proved much too strong in the final, turning in a dominating 6-1, 6-2 performance.
