Four champions highlighted the third and final day of play at the 2021 USTA Florida March Level 4 Championships, hosted by the USTA National Campus. Walking away with first-place honors was Tygen Goldammer (Estero) in the boys’ 16s division, Logan Haga (Zephyrhills) for the boys’ 18s, Carla Pacot (Boca Raton) in the girls’ 16s draw, and Anslee Long (Saint Petersburg) for the girls 18s.

A dominating return of serve performance gave boys’ 16s No. 1 seed Tygen Goldammer a 6-2, 6-2 victory over fifth seed Sebastian Mendoza (Weston) in the divisional final. Goldammer broke a total of seven times over the course of the contest, allowing Mendoza to win just 12-of-31 (39%) of the points played on his first serve. Five of the opening six games went to Goldammer before Mendoza managed to narrow the gap to 5-2 with his initial break of the match; however, Goldammer answered right back to close out the set.

An opportunity for the momentum to shift hung in the balance at the start of the second frame thanks to Mendoza leading by a break at 1-0 and 2-1. But it would be Goldammer digging deep, never allowing his opponent to consolidate and eventually claiming the final five games of the match. The total of four games were the most Goldammer lost in a single match, as he gave away a mere 10 throughout the event.

The returners also dictated play in the boys’ 18s final, where No. 2 seed Logan Haga defeated unseeded Daniel Berenblit (Ormond Beach) 6-2, 6-3. For the entirety of the match, there were only six service holds, five of which were turned in by Haga. The opening set was firmly in his grasp after he claimed a 4-0 advantage; Berenblit did break serve twice to stay close, but failed to back either up with a hold of his own.

The score stood at 2-2 in the second when Berenblit inched in front with a break in hand, setting the stage for a titanic game that lasted 24 points. Berenblit had five game points, but Haga fought each one off, finally ending the game on his fifth break point. Haga shook off two double faults to hold for 4-3, not looking back as he crossed the finish line. It was an impressive three days for the second seed, who never let a set get closer than 6-3 and gave away only 19 games in five matches.

Second-seeded Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev (Naples) jumped out to a quick lead, only to see it evaporate almost as quickly as No. 1 Carla Pacot came through 6-4, 6-2. Eight consecutive points won by Cisse-Ignatiev put her ahead by a 3-1 margin, which eventually was pushed to 4-1, before Pacot reeled off the last five games of the frame. Both players struggled on serve at the beginning of the second. Pacot managed to steady herself for a 4-2 lead, and was gifted an insurance break in the next game when Cisse-Ignatiev double faulted down break point. Living up to her top billing, Pacot won all five of her contests in straight sets, getting extended beyond 6-4 only once.

In another No. 1 versus No. 2 showdown, second seed Anslee Long outlasted fellow Saint Petersburg native Sophia Wang 6-1, 0-6, 10-8 for the girls’ 18s crown. Long stormed out of the gates for the first four games, with Wang’s hold of serve in game number five the only time she would get on the board in set one; Long broke at love to finish out the frame. The match turned almost in an instant after Long had a game point for 1-0 in the second only to be broken. Wang would go on an absolute tear, winning all but 14 points en route to recording the bagel.

After two one-sided sets, the decisive match tiebreak remained tight from start to finish. The crucial juncture happened with Long trailing five points to three, as she responded with four consecutive points to go out in front at the change of ends. Long held three match points thanks to a 9-6 cushion, which Wang closed to 9-8 by winning two points on her serve, but she could not grab the next point with Long serving. It was the second round in a row Long looked to be in full control of a match only to see the tables turned by her opponent; however, she ultimately proved her toughness in the key moments.

Taking third place in their respective division was Alexander Di Staulo (Weston) in the boys’ 16s, Phillip Dell (Bradenton) for the boys’ 18s, Maria Araoz-Gosn (Parkland) in the girls’ 16s, and Victoria Osuigwe (Bradenton) for the girls’ 18s.

Divisional consolation winners included Valentin Vazquez (Boca Raton) for the boys’ 16s, Carson Cerejo (Wellington) in the boys’ 18s, Natalie Outcalt (Ponte Vedra Beach) for the girls’ 16s, and Yanire Marte Gonzalez (Royal Palm Beach) in the girls’ 18s.
