2020 ITF J4 Orlando
Three Players Alive for Sweep
October 28, 2020

Three days of the 2020 ITF J4 Orlando main draw are in the books, setting up the semifinal singles matchups. Wednesday was also a busy day of doubles action as both the boys’ and girls’ draws were a full day behind.
Coming off his Grade 4 title last week in Atlanta, Italy’s Giulio Perego has looked sharp in Orlando. On Wednesday he turned in his third consecutive victory in straight sets, dismissing American wild card Nicholas Godsick 6-3, 6-1. His semifinal opponent will be Colton Smith (USA), who ended the run of qualifier Joseph Phillips (USA) 7-5, 6-4. Perego lost just two games when he met Smith in the second round in Atlanta.
The other semifinal will feature two seeds clashing when No. 1 Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (Paraguay) is across the net from seventh-seeded American Braden Shick. Vallejo held off Nedim Suko (USA) via a slim 6-4, 7-5 margin while Shick impressively bounced back from getting swept in the opening frame versus No. 3 Azuma Visaya (USA) to prevail 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In the girls’ singles draw, all four semifinalists are American. Top-seeded Alexis Blokhina was dangerously close to elimination in her match with Calissa Dellabarca (USA); after winning the first set, Blokhina let the second slip away before clawing her way to a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(1) result. She will now face off with qualifier Sarah Hamner, who handled fellow American Olivia Lincer in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The bottom half of the draw saw No. 6 Katja Wiersholm a mere few points from defeat before quickly turning things around. Grace O’Donnell (USA) took the opening set 6-3 but failed to put the match away in the second; Wiersholm eventually forced a tiebreak, which she won seven points to four, and then held a 4-0 lead when O’Donnell retired. Meanwhile, wild card and last week’s finalist Ashlyn Krueger booked her spot in the semifinals by outlasting qualifier Tsehay Driscoll 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Three competitors – one boy and two girls – are also still in the running to take home the doubles crown in Orlando. Shick, who was the doubles champion in Atlanta, has teamed up with American Ryan Colby to reach the final four. The eighth-seeded pairing took down No. 2 seeds Nishesh Basavareddy (USA) and Jayden Templeman (Canada) 6-3, 7-6(6) on Wednesday. Additionally, American duo John Kim and Kian Vakili upset top seeds Sam Scherer (USA) and Visaya 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 while another American team Jonah Braswell and Timothy Phung defeated No. 4 seeds Perego and Vallejo 6-2, 7-6(4).
In girls’ doubles action, partners Hamner and Krueger continued their impressive week by reaching the semifinal stage with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marcela Lopez (USA) and Stephanie Sanchez (Venezuela). They will battle Atlanta champions Julia Fliegner and Elisabeth Jones, both of the United States, who are responsible for knocking out the No. 2 and No. 8 seeds so far this week. In the top half, No. 1 Eva Elbaz (France) and Chelsea Fontenel (Switzerland) needed a match tiebreak for the second day in a row to advance, beating the fifth-seeded American duo of Gracie Epps and Aubrey Nisbet 7-6(3), 2-6, 10-6.
All semifinal singles matches along with the two remaining doubles quarterfinal contests are slated for an 8 a.m. start. For more information on the 2020 ITF J4 Orlando, click here.
