Sunday was another busy day of match play for the 2020 USTA Florida 18 & Over Men’s 4.0 & Women’s 2.5/3.0/4.5 Sectional Championships on the grounds of the USTA National Campus. One team took home a title while the other three divisions will be decided Monday.

The women’s 4.5 competition concluded on the day, as the final round of flight play was completed in the morning followed by the divisional championship in the afternoon. Escambia (Pensacola Country Club) owned Flight 1 by winning eight of their nine individual matchups while Hillsborough (HCC Tennis Complex – Tampa) was challenged a bit more in Flight 2 but still went 3-0 to advance.

There was little drama in the final, as Hillsborough quickly grabbed all three opening sets with just four games dropped. Maria Stand breezed to a comprehensive 6-2, 6-0 triumph on the lone singles court to go along with teammates Denise Agnew and Meredith Mueller cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 result at the second doubles position. Closing out the sweep was the duo of Elizabeth McCafferty and Lisa Shelton thanks to their 6-1, 6-4 victory on court one.

Captained by Kelly Sincich, the full Hillsborough roster includes Faith Sincich, Mary Paul, Agnew, Avery Zercoe, Stand, Karen Harkey, Margaret Roset, Michele Ironsmith, JoAnn Barbetta, Jenelle Morgan, Kate Panawash, Shelton, McCafferty, Mueller, and Dagmar Rocker.

Four teams remain in the men’s 4.0 division after the field was whittled down to the knockout stages, which will be played out Monday. Broward (Parkland Tennis Center) emerged from Flight 1 a perfect 3-0 after downing previously unbeaten Alachua (Jonesville Tennis Center – Gainesville). They have drawn Flight 2 champion Hillsborough (HCC Tennis Complex – Tampa) in the semifinals; Hillsborough won all three duals thanks to eight court victories. The other semifinal will feature Duval (Jacksonville Golf and Country Club), a club that recorded back-to-back sweeps on Sunday to claim Flight 3, going up against wild card entrant and second-place finisher in Flight 2 Miami-Dade (Doral Park Country Club).

Sunday marked the first day of play for the women’s 2.5 competition, where the five teams were in action for two rounds of matches. Orange/Seminole (Lake Cane Tennis Center – Orlando) sits atop the standings at 2-0; the rest of the field has at least one loss. However, despite the unblemished record, Orange/Seminole owns the same amount of individual matchup victories and lost more sets than second-place Alachua (Haile Plantation Country Club – Gainesville).

Dominating performances highlighted the women’s 3.0 action on day two of the event. The division wrapped up its round-robin duals and will transition to the semifinals Monday morning. Hillsborough (Tampa Yacht & Country Club) powered their way through Flight 1 to go 4-0 on the strength of going 11-for-12 on the courts their players contested, losing a mere three sets. Across the net from Hillsborough on Monday will be Miami-Dade (Kendall Tennis Training Center – Miami) following an equally impressive effort to take Flight 3 with a sterling 3-0 record. Flight 2 winner Duval (OakLeaf Tennis – Orange Park) handled all four of their duals with relative ease as well with nine individual matchups going in their favor; Duval is set to clash with Orange/Seminole (Red Bug Lake Park – Casselberry), who earned the wild card despite suffering two losses.

The final day of play is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning. For more information on the 2020 USTA FL 18 & Over Men’s 4.0 & Women’s 2.5/3.0/4.5 Sectional Championships, click here.
