Krueger Dominates Final Day
October 30, 2020

Heading into last week’s Grade 4 event in Atlanta, American Ashlyn Krueger owned a record of 2-3 in ITF main draw competition since the restart of play. However, after making a run to the Atlanta final, she went one step further this week at the ITF J4 Orlando, besting fellow American Sarah Hamner 6-2, 6-4 to claim the singles title. Following that match, Krueger and Hamner teamed up for a 6-0, 7-5 victory in the doubles championship contest.
Also on Friday, boys’ singles No. 1 seed Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (Paraguay) turned in a solid performance to defeat Giulio Perego (Italy), who was coming off earning the singles crown in Atlanta, by a 6-2, 6-2 margin. In an all-American doubles final, unseeded Jonah Braswell and Timothy Phung held off No. 8 Ryan Colby and Braden Shick 6-4, 6-3
The day began with the two singles championship tilts. On the girls’ side, it was wild card versus qualifier, as Krueger was still competing in the Atlanta event when qualifying began in Orlando while Hamner was riding a seven-match winning streak thanks to coming through the qualifying draw. Four consecutive holds put the score at 2-2 before Krueger rattled off the last four games of the set. She would also get out to a quick lead at 2-1 with a break in hand, but a few more unforced errors began to creep into her game, opening the door for Hamner to get back on serve with a 3-2 advantage. Both would struggle on serve the rest of the way, as three breaks highlighted the back half of the frame. Eventually, Krueger served for the victory at 5-4, where she shook off a double fault on the first point of the game to close it out.
For boys’ champion Vallejo, it was a straightforward final after being on court for three hours in the semifinal round. He broke Perego in the very first game, gaining an insurance break late in set while dropping a mere six points on his own serve. Perego dug deep to up his level in the second, but a break for Vallejo at 1-1 was all he would need. He continued to hold comfortably until the final game of the match, when he let three match points slip away before crossing the finish line on his fourth. Vallejo never faced a break point on the day.
Going from opponents to teammates in less than an hour, Krueger and Hamner came out sharp to sweep the first set against another American tandem of Sophie Llewellyn and Mia Slama. Furthermore, when Krueger and Hamner broke Llewellyn for a 3-1 advantage, the end appeared to be in sight. That’s just when the contest took a turn thanks to a string of three games going in favor of Llewellyn and Slama. Five of the last six games would end in breaks of serve, including Slama being broken at love when serving for the set at 5-4; Llewellyn would also get broken in the final game, ending the match on a double fault.
Boys’ doubles champions Braswell and Phung never trailed on Friday. They pushed ahead 4-2 with a break, only to give it right back in the next game. Phung held at love for a 5-4 advantage, which was followed up by breaking Colby for the opening set. It seemed to be a runaway from there after Braswell and Phung sprinted out to a 3-0 lead with three break points for 4-0. Colby saved them all for a crucial hold, as he and Shick did fight back to get on serve. Double faults would doom them in the following game, however, as Colby served up two of them, the second coming on a break point. Braswell stepped to the line to serve for the championship, slipping into a 15-40 hole only to grab the next three points to slam the door shut.
