Orlando Open ATP Challenger
Giron to Play for Singles Title
January 5, 2019

American Marcos Giron continued his career-best showing at the Orlando Open, reaching his first career ATP Challenger Tour final, where he will face top-seeded Darian King of Barbados, who is seeking his fourth ATP Challenger Tour title.
The unseeded Giron, a California native and former NCAA singles champion at UCLA, defeated No. 12 seed Gastao Elias of Portugal in straight sets in today’s first semifinal. King advanced by bringing to an end American wild card Michael Redlicki’s remarkable Orlando run, with a straight-sets victory in the second match.
King is 3-2 all-time in ATP Challenger Tour finals, his most recent title coming in 2016. Giron has previously reached an ATP Challenger quarterfinal eight times but had never progressed beyond the final eight. The two have previously met four times, dating back to 2011, splitting the all-time series as 2-2.
Tomorrow’s singles final will be contested at 11 a.m and admission is free.
In the doubles final, Romain Arneodo of Monaco and Andrei Vasilevski of Belarus took home the inaugural Orlando Open title in a thrilling match that saw the top-seeded pair prevail 15-13 in the third-set super tiebreak. They defeated the third-seeded duo of Portugal’s Goncalo Oliveira and Italy’s Andrea Vavassori.
The Orlando Open, which is a USTA Pro Circuit ATP Challenger event, is the first USTA Pro Circuit ATP Challenger event of the 2019 season and is the highest level of tennis on display to date at the USTA National Campus, with a prize-money pool of more than $54,000.
