2019 USTA Boys' 12s National Clay Court Championships
Singles Quartes, Doubles Semis Set
July 17, 2019

Wednesday marked the fourth day of the 2019 USTA Boys’ 12 National Clay Court Championships, presented by adidas. Now past the halfway point of the event, just eight players in singles and four duos in doubles remain in the hunt for the coveted titles.
The big result of the day was turned in by 12th-seeded Maximus Dussault (Leesburg, Va.), who rallied back from being down a set to upend No. 1 Cooper Woestendick (Olathe, Kan.) 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Woestendick had given away just eight games in his first three matches, and appeared to be on his way to another victory in straight sets before Dussault turned the tables.
All of the other top eight seeds were able to safely advance to the quarterfinal stage, with just fifth seed A Filer (South Bend, Ind.) needing three sets to get by No. 11 Andrew Ena (Rego Park, N.Y.) before eventually prevailing 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Filer is the next opponent for Dussault. Rounding out the top half of the draw is No. 4 Abhinav Chunduru (Plano, Texas) thanks to his tough 7-5, 6-4 victory against No. 15 Oliver Narbut (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and seventh-seeded Jagger Leach (Laguna, Beach, Calif.) after his quick 6-1, 6-1 defeat of No. 16 Blake Hilsen (Cumming, Ga.).
Sixth seed Cassius Chinlund (Los Angeles) survived a tiebreak in the opening frame of his round of 16 contest with No. 14 Prathinav Chunduru (Plano, Texas), claiming it seven points to one, before taking the second set 6-3. Next up for him is third-seeded Abhishek Thorat (Lithia, Fla.), perhaps the most dominant player in the field so far; Thorat has recorded four 6-0 sets, including one in his 6-1, 6-0 effort over No. 13 Braeden Gelletich (Goshen, N.Y.).
Roman Sancilio (Henrico, Va.), the eighth seed in the event, was impressive in the No. 8 vs. No. 9 showdown, turning away Francisco Salmain (Houston) by a 6-1, 6-2 score line. He will clash with second seed Maxwell Exsted (Savage, Minn.) in the quarterfinals after Exsted dropped just three games in dispatching Jacobus Smit (Fort Mill, S.C.), the last of the unseeded players left in the main draw.
In doubles, both the round of 16 and quarterfinal rounds were played on Wednesday. The first team to book their spot in the semifinals was No. 3 Ena and Mark Krupkin (Millburn, N.J.). The Eastern Section pairing fought off the determined unseeded tandem of Ethan Barrett (San Marino, Calif.) and Winston Lee (Glendale, Calif.) 6-3, 7-6(5) in the round of 16 before slipping past No. 5 seeds Salmain and Benjamin Sparks (Fredericksburg , Texas) 6-1, 6-4.
Also staying alive for the title was the fourth-seeded duo of Hilsen and Sancilio, who survived a thrilling 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 match versus No. 9 Sebastian Bielen (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and Gelletich before breezing through their quarterfinal by a 6-1, 6-0 margin over eighth-seeded Chinlund and Nischal Spurling (Los Angeles).
The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds also managed to reach the semifinals, but had to wrap up their quarterfinal victories indoors. Exsted helped Woestendick exact revenge from his earlier singles loss, as the top seeds bested the unseeded Maximus and Tristan Dussault 6-3, 6-1 in their first match of the day. They had just gotten underway in the quarterfinals, taking on the unseeded hopefuls Andrew Li (San Diego) and Dylan Long (Carmel, Ind.), when play was halted; Exsted and Woestendick dominated indoors, taking the match 6-0, 6-1.
The second-seeded Chundurus were pushed to the limit on two occasions Wednesday. First in the round of 16 by No. 9 Jimin Jung (Cary, N.C.) and Nicholas Patrick (Coal Valley, Ill.) before prevailing 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, and then by sixth seeds Ian Mayew (Cary, N.C.) and Narbut in quarterfinals, where they shook off letting a lead slip away in the second set to take the 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-6 win.
Play continues on Thursday at 8 a.m. The singles quarterfinals will take to the courts at 9:30 a.m. while the doubles semifinals are slated for the afternoon. For complete results and upcoming match times from the 2019 USTA Boys’ 12s National Clay Court Championships, click here.
