For those who have visited or played at the USTA National Campus, a familiar face reached the second week of Wimbledon.
Former UCLA standout Mackenzie McDonald has been training at the Campus in Orlando, and all of the hard work paid off on the grass courts in London. The 2016 NCAA singles and doubles champion advanced to the round of 16 this year, picking up 180 points along the way. McDonald started the season inside the top 200, but will likely now find himself inside the top 90.
McDonald had an impressive year leading up to his appearance at Wimbledon, winning an ATP Challenger event in Seoul, being a quarterfinalist at the ATP 250 event in `s-Hertogenbosch and qualifying for the Australian Open where he got to the round of 64 and barely lost to No. 3 seed Grigor Dimitrov, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 0-6, 8-6.
McDonald told USA Today that working out at the USTA National Campus has been very beneficial: “It’s a big change, and it’s a sacrifice I made, because it’s not like California. It’s paying off and I like being there. The conditions for training are the best. You do what you gotta do.”
With the hard court season ahead, fans should be on the lookout for even more exciting runs by the UCLA Bruin.
