Rain and lightning cut the opening day of the 2018 USTA National Campus UTR Summer Jam Level 7 short, but not before a majority of matches were completed.

Saturday produced a mixed bag of results for the top-rated players. In the 14s competitions, the No. 1 seed was knocked out in two of the boys’ and one of the girls’ draws. Conversely, the top four players in the boys’ 18s draw make up the semifinals while the No. 1 and No. 2 girls’ 18s seeds are also still in the hunt for the title.

The 14s Federer Flight held true to form through the opening round, with first seed Caleb Domkowski (Indian Harbour Beach) winning without surrendering a game while second seed Gian Corbin (Orlando) advanced 6-1, 6-2. No. 1 seed in the Isner Flight, Luke Riley (Ocala), fell to Connor Smirl (Delray Beach) 7-6, 6-3 in the first round; meanwhile, No. 2 seed Harrison Schwartzburg (Ocala) survived a match tiebreak to start his day en route to reaching Sunday’s final. It will be a battle of unseeded hopefuls from Mexico in the championship match of the Tiafoe Flight. Alejandro Barba-Toba and Dario Miguel Orozco Yanez, who train together in Guanajuato, will face off after each winning two contests Saturday.

None of the four seeded players were challenged in the boys’ 18s. All received a bye in the opening round, while in the quarterfinals the most games any player lost was two. Additionally, each won at least one set by the margin of 6-0.

Girls’ 14s seeds in the Madison Flight looked strong on the day to reach the semifinals, with No. 1 Jocelyn Mery (Lake Mary) prevailing 6-1, 6-1 and second-seeded Fiona Smirl (Delray Beach) getting through 6-2, 6-2. The exact opposite was true in the Sloane Flight, where top seed Sandra Supo (Vero Beach) came up short in a hard-fought matchup with Eva Harris (Lakeland), 6-4, 7-5; No. 2 seed Valentina Perez (Vero Beach) was defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Alyssa Novoa (Apopka).

In the lone girls’ 18s draw, seeds Sandra Swiderski (Wesley Chapel) and Holly Hunter (Winter Haven) moved into the semifinals. Swiderski got past Jessica Marant 7-6, 6-1 while Hunter did not have to take the court after receiving a walkover.

Play continues at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
