2018 USTA February National Level 2
Girls' No. 2 Seed Falls in Singles and Doubles
February 10, 2018

With the first day of play complete at the USTA February National Level 2, hosted by the USTA National Campus, a pair of surprising results stand out after two rounds of singles and one round of doubles are in the books.
No. 2 seed Sonia Tartakovsky from the USTA Eastern Section got through her opening round match with ease, but came up short in her next match against Southern’s AnneMarie Hiser. The unseeded Hiser took the first set easily, 6-2, and held on to claim the second by the slim margin of 7-5.
In the girls’ doubles draw, the second-seeded pair of Briana Crowley (Midwest) and Alana Wolfberg (Florida) were edged out by the Southern duo of Ava Hrastar and Ruth Marsh, 7-6(4). The three other seeded tandems all moved on to the quarterfinals, with only No. 3 seeds Yekaterina Alferova and Kylie Collins, also of USTA Southern, being tested.
The girls’ singles draw nearly saw third seed Crowley knocked out in the opening round in a back-and-forth matchup versus Eastern’s Julia Andreach. It was Andreach who toughed out the first frame in a tiebreak, seven points to two, but Crowley clawed her way back to one set apiece by winning the second 6-3. The decisive set came down to just a few points, with Crowley prevailing 6-4. Meanwhile No. 1 seed Anika Yarlagadda from USTA Midwest lost just seven games on the day and fourth seed Wolfberg gave away a total of nine.
The top four seeds of the boys’ draw have all advanced to the final eight, but not without some challenges. No. 1 Noah Schachter (Florida) got his tournament off to a smooth start with a 6-3, 6-2 victory, but was pushed to three sets in his round of 16 match against Jeremie Casabon (Middle States) before securing the 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win. Fourth seed Matthew Segura, also hailing from USTA Florida, had to escape two matches that went the distance. In both encounters he held a set advantage only to see his opponent rally back; he triumphed in the third and decisive sets 6-4 in both instances.
No. 3 seed Henry Patrick Cacciatore (Florida) dropped a mere total of ten games in his two matches while two seed J J Mercer cruised through his first round 6-0, 6-3 before seeing his round of 16 opponent retire at 6-0, 2-0.
Three of the four boys’ doubles seeds survived close calls on Saturday while No. 4 seeds Juan Bianchi (Florida) and Tyler Stice (Southern) turned in a 6-3 result. No. 1 seeds Robert Cash and Mercer of USTA Midwest along with Harry and Grey Cacciatore of USTA Florida needed a tiebreak to move on; the third-seeded team of Southern’s Brandon and Nicholas McKinney produced a 6-4 win.
Matches are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. For draws, complete results and daily match times from the 2018 USTA February National Level 2, click here.
