2018 USTA May National Level 2
Opening Day Plagued by Rain
May 19, 2018

The first day of play at the 2018 USTA May National Level 2, featuring some of the nation’s top boys and girls in the 16s division, turned into a lengthy one that finished indoors at the USTA National Campus due to heavy rain. Almost all scheduled matches were completed, with the singles draw down to the round of 16 going into Sunday.
On the boys’ side, the top four seeds remain alive in the main draw, with only No. 3 Dillon Blake (Miami, Fla.) dropping a set on the day. Top seed Jack Anthrop (Orlando, Fla.) plus No. 2 seed Jacob Bickersteth (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and fourth seed Trinity Grear (Adelphi, Md.) lost a combined 15 games in the first two rounds of play.
The highest seeded player to fall on the day was No. 6 Eli Gordon (Highland Park, Ill.). He got through his opening round match in straight sets but was stopped by Zak Vince (Clermont, Fla.) in the round of 32 by a final score of 6-3, 7-5. Other upsets in the boys’ draw included No. 11 Michael Nicholls (Aventura, Fla.) and 13th-seeded Nikhil Charanjiva (Boca Raton, Fla.), both defeated in the first round.
Similar results were turned in over the course of two rounds in the girls’ main draw. Top seed Madison Sieg (Greenwich, Conn.), No. 2 Leyden Games (Newport Beach, Calif.), third seed Brooke Theis (Lake Forest, Ill.) and No. 4 Ellie Pittman (Indianapolis) were not challenged en route to securing a spot in the third round.
Several of the draw’s top players were not as fortunate. Seventh seed Sara Snyder (San Juan, P.R.) was knocked out in the first round by Juliette Finch (Delray Beach, Fla.), as was No. 8 Mya Byrd (Norfolk Va.) by her unseeded opponent Isabel Pacheco (Weston, Fla.). No. 12 Jordan Grayson (Gaithersburg, Md.) advanced to the round of 32 before falling to Makenna Doyle (Boca Raton, Fla.) in a three-set battle, while 13th-seeded Olivia Almy could get nothing going in her first match against Jaleesa Leslie (Apopka, Fla.). Saige Roshkoff (Haverford, Pa.), the No. 16 seed, fell in straight sets to Violeta Martinez (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.).
Due to adjustments being made in the schedule on Saturday, all doubles matches were postponed for the boys. Conversely, the girls were able to complete the first round of their doubles draw. The top four seeds all received byes. The sixth-seeded duo of Anushka Khune (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass.) was the only opening round casualty via a 6-0 sweep delivered by the tandem of Martinez and Snyder.
Action continues Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m., beginning with doubles followed by consolation singles. For more information on the 2018 USTA National Level 2 Championships, click here.
