Qualifying Complete, Main Draw Underway

June 18, 2019
primary-article-image

The Orlando Tennis Series completed qualifying and began the first round of the main draw during a rain-shortened day of action at the USTA National Campus.

The event, which is an ITF World Tennis Tour M15 and W15 event, features some of the top up-and-coming men’s and women’s players from around the world, including both current and former collegians, as well as top American juniors.

The men’s singles main draw saw two matches completed, with top-seeded Keenan Mayo, a rising sophomore at the University of Illinois, and Vasil Kirkov, who trains at the USTA National Campus, both advancing in straight sets.

In the women’s singles main draw, third-seeded Connie Ma, considered one of the best 16-year-olds in the country, advanced to the second round with a three-set win. Also advancing Tuesday were Americans Joelle Kissell and Sofia Sewing, the tournament’s No. 6 and No. 7 seeds, respectively.

The ITF World Tennis Tour is the new umbrella name for all former USTA Pro Circuit and Junior Circuit tournaments and serves as the player pathway between the junior game and the elite levels of professional tennis.

The Orlando Tennis Series is the second professional tennis tournament to be held at the USTA National Campus this year. In January, the campus welcomed the Orlando Open, an ATP Challenger 90 men’s event that saw American Marcos Giron win the first ATP title of his career.

The main draw continues tomorrow and concludes with the doubles finals of Saturday, June 22, followed by the singles finals on Sunday, June 23. Play begins daily at 9 a.m. Admission to the Orlando Tennis Series is free.
