Due to the wave of Florida rains over the weekend, it was catch-up day on Monday at the 69th USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Singles Championships, and some additional mustard was provided by unseeded players with high-profile upsets to move into the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.

Boys’ and girls’ 18s-16s action is taking place at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona in Orlando, and 14s-12s age divisions at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

Ft. Lauderdale’s Demi Snyder upset the apple cart in the Girls’ 16s. The unseeded Snyder ousted No. 9 seed Bin Zheng of Miami, 7-6(4), 6-3, in the round of 16, then later in the day became the only unseeded player into the semifinals when she shocked No. 1 seed Jordana Ossa of Miami, 6-1, 7-5.

Aventura’s unseeded Alexandra Yepifanova had similar results in the Girls’ 18s, upending No. 13 seed Yekaterina Martens of Miami, 6-3, 7-6(3), in the round of 16 and becoming the lone unseeded player into the semifinals by toppling No. 2 seed Kylie Moulin of Lithia, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

Unseeded Eugene Clur of Pembroke Pines was the party crasher in the Boys’ 16s, upsetting No. 10 John Barnard of Bonita Springs, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 16, then becoming the lone unseeded player in the semis after topping No. 6 Samuel Rubell of Miami Beach, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.

All the quarterfinalists in the Girls’ 14s are seeded, including No. 10 Alexis Blokhina of Plantation, who on Monday upset No. 2-seeded D.J. Bennett of Belleview, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Also all-seeded is the Boys’ 14s quarterfinals, where the Top 4 seeds led the way among upset-makers such as No. 13 Mekhi Gbedey of Wellington, who ousted No. 8 Timmy Phung of Bradenton, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0; and No. 16 Junchung Shang of Naples, who defeated No. 5 seed Michael Nicholls of Aventuram 7-6(1), 6-2. No. 2 seed Ben Shelton of Gainesville, son of University of Florida coach and former ATP star Bryan Shelton, was the lone quarterfinal match winner Monday; he defeated No. 7 Julen Morgan of Miami, 6-0, 6-0, to secure the first spot in the semifinals.

The top seeds in the Girls’ 12s were all business on Monday. The Top 5 seeds all moved into the quarterfinals after recording eight 6-0 or 6-1 set wins between them. The exception was No. 6 seed Ahmani Guichard of Seminole, who was upset by No. 11 seed Chelsea Bluestein of Naples, 6-3, 6-3. Top-seeded Lara Smejkal was the lone quarterfinal match played in the Girls’ 12s Monday, as the Boca Raton resident defeated neighboring No. 7 seed Mia Slama of Boca Raton, 6-2, 6-1, to lock down the first semifinal spot.

The Boys’ 12s round of 16 was tumultuous. Three Top 10 seeds were upset at the hands of No. 10 Tanner Povey of Indian Rocks Beach, No. 11 Manuel Palmieri of Miami Beach, and No. 14 Jonathan Irwanto of Miami Shores. The No. 10-seeded Povey later in the day became the first into the semifinals, defeating the No. 14 Irwanto, 6-1, 6-2.
