2018 USTA February National Level 2
Hohmann, Crowley Crowned Singles Champions
February 12, 2018
Ronald Hohmann of USTA Eastern and USTA Midwest’s Briana Crowley earned singles crowns on Monday to close out the 2018 USTA February National Level 2, hosted by the USTA National Campus. The third and final day of play saw some of the nation's most talented juniors in the 18s age division claim titles.
Hohmann defeated Henry Patrick Cacciatore (Florida) in straight sets while Crowley was pushed to the distance before securing the victory over Alana Wolfberg (Florida).
Seeded eighth, Hohmann capped off his impressive tournament with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-4 result against No. 3 seed Cacciatore. The win was his fifth straight-set triumph in five matches, as he was only extended beyond 6-4 twice.
The two players held to begin the match before Hohmann broke for a 2-1 advantage. Cacciatore would stay close until 3-2, when Hohmann reeled off the final three games of the set. It appeared he would run away with the second, grabbing a quick break for a 2-0 lead, but Caccciatore fought back to even the score at 2-2. Hohmann earned the crucial break in the next game, which was followed by the two competitors holding serve the rest of the way.
Dating back to the 2017 Eddie Herr International in November, Hohmann has now collected three consecutive singles trophies, prevailing in the 16s draw at that prestigious event. He kicked off his 2018 season by winning the USTA National Level 3 in Crandon Park in January.
In the girls’ final, third seed Crowley and No. 4 seed Wolfberg broke more times than they held in the first frame. Crowley’s hot start was quickly extinguished, with Wolfberg turning a 2-0 deficit into a break lead at 3-2. Crowley steadied herself from there, breaking back for 3-3 before taking consecutive games at love; she served out the set 6-3. The second featured three separate streaks: a string of four holds, immediately followed by four breaks, which then lead to three more holds of service. That gave Wolfberg a slim 6-5 advantage, where she broke for the third time in the set to take it 7-5.
Crowley shook off the disappointment quickly in the decider, breaking Wolfberg to open. She then survived a 20-point game on serve. Crowley secured an insurance break to build an insurmountable 4-1 lead and closed out the win, 6-2, with relative ease.
Claiming doubles trophies on Monday were top-seeded Midwest duo Robert Cash and J J Mercer after they held off No. 4 seeds Juan Bianchi (Florida) and Tyler Stice (Southern) 6-4 along with the unseeded Southern tandem of Ava Hrastar and Ruth Marsh via their 6-3 upset of No. 1 seeds Clarissa and Christina Hand of the Middle States. Third-place doubles finishers for the boys were Cacciatore and Noah Schacter (Florida), who edged out Russell Berdusco (Florida) and Keshav Chopra (Southern) 7-5. Yekaterina Alferova and Kylie Collins earned third on the girls’ side thanks to a 6-3 win over Carly Briggs and AnneMarie Hiser in an all-USTA Southern matchup.
In other singles action, Matthew Segura (Florida) took third after receiving a walkover from Mercer while Schachter claimed fifth with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Spencer Gray. USTA Florida representative Logan Zapp earned the consolation title after slipping past Jeremie Casabon (Middle States) 3-6, 6-4 10-4. Rounding up girls’ singles play, USTA Midwest’s Anika Yarlagadda defeated Collins 6-2, 6-3 for third and Briggs recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sophia Hatton (Eastern) for fifth. Hrastar was crowned the consolation champion after beating Sonia Tartakovsky (Eastern) 6-4, 6-3.
