2019 USTA Boys' 12s National Clay Court Championships
Second Day in the Books
July 15, 2019
The 2019 USTA Boys’ 12s National Clay Court Championships, presented by adidas, continued on Monday. With the completion of two days of play, the singles main draw has been cut down to the final 32 competitors; inclement weather prevented all doubles matches from finishing.
It was another easy day on court for the favorites, as the top four seeds breezed through the competition as part of Monday’s early slate of matches. No. 1 Cooper Woestendick (Olathe, Kan.) took care of Omar Aboseada (Devon, Pa.) 6-0, 6-2. He will be up against a seeded player in the next round in the form of No. 17 Jimin Jung (Cary, N.C.), who defeated Palmer Byrnes (Athens, Ga.) 6-1, 6-1. Second seed Maxwell Exsted (Savage, Minn.) dropped just one game in his victory over Nathan Hernandez (Hinsdale, Ill.); next up for Exsted is No. 17 Ronan O’Dwyer (Fishers, N.Y.), who rallied past Matthew Carioscia (La Jolla, Calif.) 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
No. 3 Abhishek Thorat (Lithia, Fla.) turned in another 6-0 set on Monday, this time beating Valentin Sorokin (Irvine, Calif.) 6-2, 6-0. Thorat has drawn No. 17 Ian Mayew (Cary, N.C.) in the next round after Mayew won 6-0, 6-2 versus Ajinkya Karnataki (Cupertino, Calif.). Fourth-seeded Abhinav Chunduru (Plano, Texas) seemingly had a tough matchup with Sebatian Bielen (Glen Cove, N.Y.), who won his opening round match without surrendering a game; however, Chunduru was too strong, posting a 6-1, 6-0 result to advance. Another potentially tricky opponent awaits him in the round of 32, as No. 17 Zach Friedland (Hollywood, Fla.) raised the winners’ trophy in the last tournament he contested at the USTA National Campus.
Just one lone seed stumbled on Monday, as Ilija Palavestra (Delray Beach, Fla.) came through with a comprehensive effort to upset No. 17 Benjamin Sparks (Fredericksburg, Texas) 6-0, 6-2. Additionally, in the two matches featuring unseeded competitors squaring off, Rama Subodh Pottipati (Boca Raton, Fla.) took down Shashwat Srivatsa (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) 6-2, 6-0 and Jacobus Smit (Fort Mill, S.C.) held off George Rangelov (Largo, Fla.) 6-2, 7-6(3).
The doubles contests to finish before the suspension of play included Exsted and Woestendick moving through with a 6-1, 6-0 score line over Adam Bain (Newport Coast, Calif.) and Nathan Gold (Denver). Other seeded duos recording victories included No. 6 Mayew and Oliver Narbut (Chapel Hill, N.C.), ninth-seeded Aidan Bart (Tuxedo Park, N.Y.) and Alexander Di Staulo (Weston, Fla.), and No. 9 Jung and Nicholas Patrick (Coal Valley, Ill.).
Southern California tandem Ethan Barrett (San Marino) and Winston Lee (Glendale) defeated Aboseada and Marton Szabo (Wynnewood, Pa.) 6-1, 6-3 in a matchup of unseeded teams.
Action picks back up at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, starting with singles main draw and consolation matches.
