June 20, 2019

The Orlando Tennis Series main draw continued on Thursday with a jam-packed day of tennis that saw multiple rounds completed at the USTA National Campus.

The event, which is an ITF World Tennis Tour M15 and W15 event, features some of the top up-and-coming men’s and women’s players from around the world, including both current and former collegians, as well as top American juniors.

All eight quarterfinals spots secured in the women’s singles main draw on Thursday went to Americans, guaranteeing an all-American final on Sunday. The top four seeds, No.1 Grace Min, No. 2 Tori Kinard, No. 3 Connie Ma, and No. 4 Natasha Subhash all advanced with relative ease. They’ll be joined in the quarterfinals by the seventh-seeded Sofia Sewing, rising high school junior Kimmi Hance, as well as qualifiers Karina Miller and Eleana Yu.

The men’s singles main draw wrapped up the first round and finished the second round on Thursday. The upset of the day belonged to 20-year-old Vasil Kirkov who knocked off the top-seeded Keena Mayo in straight sets. Kirkov was one of five Americans that advanced to the quarterfinals, joining fourth-seeded Paul C. Oosterbaan, No. 7 seed Strong Kirchheimer, University of Illinois rising senior Aleks Kovacevic and qualifier Mwendwa Mbithi.

The ITF World Tennis Tour is the new umbrella name for all former USTA Pro Circuit and Junior Circuit tournaments and serves as the player pathway between the junior game and the elite levels of professional tennis.

The Orlando Tennis Series is the second professional tennis tournament to be held at the USTA National Campus this year. In January, the campus welcomed the Orlando Open, an ATP Challenger 90 men’s event that saw American Marcos Giron win the first ATP title of his career.

The main draw continues tomorrow and concludes with the doubles finals of Saturday, June 22, followed by the singles finals on Sunday, June 23. Play begins daily at 9 a.m. Admission to the Orlando Tennis Series is free.
