2019 Oracle Pro Series Orlando
Singles Round of 16, Doubles Quarters Set
November 13, 2019

The Oracle Pro Series Orlando continued on Wednesday on the grounds of the USTA National Campus, marking the first full day of exclusively main draw play. As the schedule wrapped up, the singles draws had been whittled down to the round of 16 while the doubles draws have reached the quarterfinal stage.
Marking the sixth of seven stops of the Oracle Pro Series this fall, the week features men’s and women’s ITF World Tennis Tour $25k events.
Qualifier and former Florida Gator Alfredo Perez (United States) pulled off the lone upset in the men’s singles draw, spending over three hours on court before eventually edging out sixth seed Sebastian Baez (Argentina) 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(2). The only other seed to even be pushed to a third set was No. 8 Bastian Malla of Chile, who staged a comeback from a set down to defeat countryman Gonzalo Lama 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
American Ulises Blanch, the men’s No. 5 seed, put together an outstanding day in both singles and doubles. He started the morning by easing past qualifier Joao Hinsching of Brazil 6-3, 6-2. He would then go on to team up with Argentine Genaro Alberto Olivieri for a one-sided 6-3, 6-0 result versus the fourth-seeded tandem of Alexander Cozbinov (Moldova) and Adam Moundir (Morocco).
The No. 1 men’s duo of Nicolas Alvarez (Peru) and Pedro Sakamoto (Brazil) got off to a strong start by beating Baez and Maxime Mora (France) 6-1, 7-5. They will face off with American wild card pairing JanMagnus Johnson and Logan Zapp, one of three all-American teams to reach the quarterfinals; Nathan Ponwith and Preston Touliatos along with wild cards Cash Hanzlik and Emilio Nava also scored victories on Wednesday.
In women’s singles action, top seed and WTA Top 100 player Arantxa Rus (Netherlands) needed exactly three hours in her triumph over Gabriela Talaba (Romania), bouncing back from not winning a game in the opening frame for a 0-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) result. Her next opponent will be American qualifier Dasha Ivanova, who toughed out a 6-4, 7-5 effort over Carolina Meligeni Rodrigues Alves of Brazil. Second-seeded Anna Bondar (Hungary) was not as fortunate, coming up short versus qualifier Nastja Kolar (Slovenia) 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2.
Former Duke Blue Devil and last year’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Rookie of the Year Maria Mateas (United States) made great use of her wild card, scoring a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over fifth-seeded Despina Papamichail of Greece. Qualifier Maria Lourdes Carle (Argentina), a current member of the Georgia women’s tennis team, continued her solid level of play by upsetting German No. 3 seed Katharina Gerlach 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The women’s doubles draw saw two of its four seeds fail to get out of the opening round. Second seeds Bondar and Daniela Seguel (Chile) were taken out by Lea Boskovic (Croatia) and Seone Mendez (Australia) by the slimmest of margins 5-7, 6-1, 10-8; No. 4 seeds Maria Fernanda Herazo Gonzalez (Colombia) and Olivia Tjandramulia (Australia) also fell in a match tiebreak to German duo Gerlach and Julvette Maria Josephine Steur 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.
Georgina Garcia-Perez (Spain) and Papamichail, the women’s doubles top seeds, pulled out a tightly-contested match against Irina Fetecau (Romania) and Panna Udvardy (Hungary) 7-5, 6-4. Their quarterfinal foes will be Americans Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes.
Wednesday’s matches will take to the courts at 10 a.m. For more information on the 2019 Oracle Pro Series, click here.
