The opening day of play at the 2017 USTA National Winter Championships for the 16s and 18s age divisions, hosted by the USTA National Campus, is in the books, but the day did not end without its fair share of drama.

The most excitement came in boys’ and girls’ 16s singles action, where three of the top 16 seeds were upset in each draw.

For the girls’ 16s, the Nos. 4, 6 and 12 seeds all suffered defeats in the first round. Allura Zamarripa (Saint Helena, Calif.) outlasted fourth seed Anessa Lee (San Marino, Calif.) 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. The other two results involving seeds faltering occurred in straight sets. Makayla Mills (Wilmington, N.C.) got past No. 6 seed Lana Mavor (Yarmouth, Maine) 6-2, 6-4 while Sena Selby (White Plains, N.Y.) recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory over 12th-seeded Kiana Graham (Austin, Texas).

The highest boys’ seed to be upset on Wednesday, boys’ 16s No. 3 seed Spencer Brachman (Commack, N.Y.), came up short in a marathon battle against Luis Iriarte Bastidas (Weston, Fla.). Brachman breezed through the opening set 6-1 and had chances to close out a win in both the second and third sets, but it was Iriarte Bastidas who secured the pair of tiebreaks – eight points to six in set two and seven points to five in the final frame.

Jerry Wang (Fayetteville, N.C.) was impressive in his triumph over 10th seed Matthew Robinson (Wynnewood, Pa.) 6-0, 6-1. Abhimanyu Ramireddy (Cypress, Texas) also handled No. 14 seed Matthew Mu (La Jolla, Calif.) in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

While the 18s draws did hold to form for the most part on day one, second seed Michelle Sorokko (Little Neck, N.Y.) was upended by Yekaterina Alferova (Marietta, Ga.) 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2.

The first round of doubles was also completed in all draws, where several of the top seeds received byes. In girls’ 16s action, only the 10th-seeded tandem of Kiana and Maria Rizzolo (Jupiter, Fla.) failed to reach the second round, dropping a tight 7-6(5), 6-4 contest to Bridget Stammel (Dallas, Texas) and Katja Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.). Ninth seeds Tatum Burger (Steamboat Spring, Colo.) and Caroline Vincent (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) along with the 12th-seeded pair of Valerie Ho (Silver Spring, Md.) and Katherine Nguyen (Fountain Valley, Calif.) were victims of upsets in the girls’ 18s draw.

In the boys’ 16s, four seeds were knocked out in the top half of the draw. The top seeded duo of Brachman and Jeffrey Fradkin (New York, N.Y.) has withdrawn. Additionally, fourth seeds Zachery Lim (Fairfield, Calif.) and Daniel Papacica (Carmel, Calif.); No. 11 seeds Timothy Li (Valley Village, Calif.) and Matthew Sah (San Diego, Calif.); and No. 13 seeds Nadim Motaghedi (Cerritos, Calif.) and Wang all fell in their first round contests.

A total of four seeded pairs also lost in the boys’ 18s draw, including sixth-seeded Bill Duo (Portage, Mich.) and William Peters (Duxbury, Mass.), who saw Christian Alshon (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Thomas Jahn (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) move on 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. Other seeds to be eliminated were No. 12 Robert Baylon (Buena Park, Calif.) and Eric Hahn (Fullerton, Calif.), No. 13 Daniel Nuzhny (Fort Lee, N.J.) and Brett Winters (Rivervale, N.J.), and No. 16 Siddarth Chari (Saratoga, Calif.) and Marcus Ferreira (Hilton Head, S.C.).
