Three titles were claimed on day two of the 2019 USTA Florida Combo 18 & Over 5.5/7.5/9.5 Sectional Championships, hosted by the USTA National Campus. Leon (Tom Brown Park – Tallahassee) earned the 5.5 men’s crown while Broward swept the 9.5 divisions thanks to the men from the Midtown Athletic Club in Weston and the women representing the Weston Hills Country Club.

After two close wins on Saturday, Leon produced another pair of 2-1 results on Sunday to go a perfect 4-for-4 in their duals with Alachua (Westside Park – Gainesville) in the battle for men’s 5.5 supremacy. The final numbers showed Leon winning 18 sets compared to 12 for Alachua, although in total Leon collected just 10 more games.

Captained by Nagendra Yelugoti, Leon’s full roster features Raj Maheswarapu, Sai Phanidhar Pavuluri, Sumanth Gadde, Goutham Raghavarapu, Ashutosh Kumar, Nitinkumar Patel, Sanjeev Jayaprakash, Vishveshwar Kontham, and Rahul Reddy Lotla.

For the women’s 5.5 division, two losses by Escambia (Independent) on Sunday opened the door for Hillsborough (Westchase Community Association – Tampa), who went on to win Flight 1 with a 3-1 overall record. Awaiting them in Monday’s final will be Duval (Durbin Crossing – St Johns) who not only finished 3-0 in Flight 2 but did so by taking all nine courts they contested.

The three flight winners in the men’s 7.5 competition posted unbeaten records over Saturday and Sunday. Orange/Seminole (USTA National Campus – Orlando) and Duval (Charles J. Williams YMCA – Jacksonville) went 3-0 in Flight 1 and 2, respectively, with Orange/Seminole winning eight individual matchups and Duval coming through in seven. Meanwhile, Broward battled their way to the top of Flight 3 after winning four duals by a 2-1 margin. Monday’s semifinals will see Orange/Seminole across the net from Duval and Broward going up against wild card entrant SMD (Doral Park Country Club), the second-place finisher from Flight 2.

Semifinal action in the women’s 7.5 division will feature four undefeated squads. Escambia (Independent) ran away with Flight 1 on the strength of eight court victories and 17 sets won. Alachua (Westside Park – Gainesville) and Pinellas (YMCA of the Suncoast – Palm Harbor) also prevailed with impressive showings, going a perfect 4-0 in Flight 2 and 3, respectively, behind 10 individual matchups and 20 sets to their credit. SMD (Salvadore Park – Coral Gables) experienced more of a challenge in Flight 4, but still ended as the lone team without a loss after winning nine courts and 18 sets. They will take on Pinellas in the semifinal round while Escambia has drawn Alachua.

It was two very different stories for the triumphant 9.5 Broward squads. On the men’s side, the Midtown Athletic Club men won all three duals with ease; their players came through on eight of the nine courts they contested and lost only two sets while winning 16. For the women’s crew from the Weston Hills Country Club, they needed to win twice on Sunday after suffering a loss to Orange/Seminole (Lake Cane Tennis Center – Orlando) on opening day. They managed to do just that to sit atop the standings with Orange/Seminole at 3-1. Ultimately, the deciding factor was Broward’s 3-0 sweep of Escambia (Independent) on Saturday, the lone sweep in the division, which gave them eight individual matchup victories compared to just seven by Orange/Seminole.

Emilio Baez’s complete Broward roster includes Eduardo Pacheco, Antonio Maciasvaldes, Justin Touchstone, Ricardo Cardenas, Tony Faso, Jesus Rafael Rovero, Willy Sandoval, Inigo Ojer, Todd Schlorf, Laurent Leclerc, Pedro Ramirez, Dario Spilkin, Kenny Torrellas, Jeff Bill, Santiago Lopez, Joshua Sagaille, and Leonardo Torrellas.

The 9.5 Broward women are captained by Doris Montero and also features Alaina Fotiu-Wojtowicz, Natalia Moll, Leyvis Concepcion, Victoria Pierruccini, Katrina Elder-Bush, Nastasha Rodriguez, Elizabeth Galphin, Gabriela Castanon, Kelsey Matthews, and Sherril Colombo.

Monday’s schedule of play is set to get underway at 8:30 a.m. For more information from the 2019 USTA Florida Combo 18 & Over 5.5/7.5/9.5 Sectional Championships, click here.
