2018 USTA Florida Doubles Spring Challenge
Top Florida Section Duos Seek Doubles Supremacy
May 24, 2018

One of only three tournaments on the USTA National Campus calendar that is composed of exclusively doubles, the USTA Florida Doubles Spring Challenge is scheduled to get underway Saturday, May 26 and run through Monday, May 28.
The event will feature all boys’ and girls’ age divisions (12s-18s), with the boys’ and girls’ 16s played on hard court and all other draws played on clay court. The scoring format for all divisions is two out of three tiebreak sets with a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set.
Top divisional seeds on the boy’s side include Tanner Povey (Indian Rocks Beach) and Tristan Stringer (Orlando) in the 12s, Martin Mesia (Weston) and Zamaan Moledina (Delray Beach) in the 14s, Jack Anthrop (Orlando) and Emilio Van Cotthem (Fort Pierce) in the 16s, and Daniel Gale (Boca Raton) and Spencer Gray (Boca Raton) in the 18s.
Notable among those is Anthrop, who is coming off a sensational performance at the USTA May National Level 2 just a few days ago. Also held on the hard courts of the National Campus, Anthrop took the singles title along with advancing to the doubles final. Gale and Gray is the only pair to have played together so far on the year, teaming up at two separate USTA National Level 2 events, but they remain in search of their first victory as a duo.
No. 1 seeds in the girls’ divisions include Regina Alcobe-Garibay (Miami) and Susana Souhrada (Boca Raton) for the 12s, Natalie Block (Plantation) and Brooke Dugarte (Miami) for the 14s, Kassandra Di Staulo (Weston) and Hope Moulin (Lithia) for the 16s, and Sophia Edwards (Nokomis) and Alana Wolfberg (Orlando) for the 18s.
Block and Dugarte have been a dominant force in 2018, taking the 16s title at the Plantation Spring Doubles Challenge Level 5 in April and the 14s title at the USTA May National Level 2 event last week at the Arlington Parks & Recreation in Arlington, Texas. Block also won the singles crown in Arlington. Edwards and Wolfberg, although having not played together all year, also appear to be a formidable pair. Neither have been very active in 2018 on the junior scene, but Edwards did claim the 18s singles title at the USTA Florida Level 5 Academia Sanchez-Casal in her lone event so far. Meanwhile, Wolfberg is fresh off winning her third consecutive FHSAA Class 4A singles title representing Timber Creek High School.
Matches are slated to get underway at 8 a.m. For more information on the 2018 USTA Florida Doubles Spring Challenge, click here.
