Monday saw the 2020 USTA Florida 40 & Over Women’s 3.0/4.0 Sectional Championships conclude and the USTA Florida 65 & Over Sectional Invitational play the bulk of its matches. Capturing team titles on the day were the 4.0 women from Pinellas (City of Clearwater) along with the 3.0 women’s crew representing Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston).

For the women’s 3.0 division, the morning began with the semifinal round, where Orange/Seminole (USTA National Campus – Orlando) and Broward both advanced by a 2-1 margin. Orange/Seminole downed wild card Duval (Jacksonville Golf and Country Club) thanks to a dominating 6-0, 6-1 result from Cheryl Tolentino-Bernabe in singles and a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 comeback on the second doubles court by Patricia Wubker and Kathleen Sipio. Broward survived losing the singles matchup versus Miami-Dade (Kendall Tennis Training Center – Miami) after captain Adriana Montserrat and Andrea Tarud came through 6-3, 7-6 at the top doubles spot while Sondra Carpio and Yolanda Reyes-Retana hung on for a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 triumph on the other court.

Broward was once again able to overcome not taking the singles court, where Tolentino-Bernabe cruised 6-2, 6-0. Montserrat and Tarud stayed on court one, this time pulling out a 6-4, 6-4 win. Carpio also stepped back out on court for her squad, partnering with Sima Sadoughi; the tandem swept through the opening frame before finishing off the contest 6-0, 7-5.

The full Broward roster is made up of Carpio, Tarud, Sadoughi, Carol Kelly, Montserrat, Juan Yang, Sheryl Hurwit, Vanesa Toledo, Julie Solomon, Reyes-Retana, Maria Diaz, Melissa Pflum, Adriana Martin, and Natalie Lavery.

In the lone women’s 4.0 match of the day, Pinellas claimed the singles court along with the top doubles spot to earn the sectional crown over Hillsborough (FishHawk Ranch – Lithia). Jennifer Drukteinis played singles for Pinellas on Monday, turning in a solid 6-1, 6-3 effort; teammates Aspen Kahl and Jennifer Garlick paired up for an extended 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 victory in doubles. Once the title had been clinched, Pinellas retired at the other doubles position, giving Hillsborough’s Jackie Caouette and Shannon Deck the win to put the final tally at 2-1.

Captained by Kelly Hansen, the complete Pinellas roster includes Holly Charles, Jennifer Bell, Laura Hungiville, Dorothy Crosse, Debbie Dawson, Kahl, Garlick, Anna Fotopoulos, Monica Sanchez, Drukteinis, and Anne Pulley.

All four divisions making up the 65 & Over Sectional Invitational were in action throughout the day. In the men’s 7.0 competition, Marion (Glenview Champions Tennis Club – The Villages) defeated both Duval (Marsh Creek Country Club – St. Augustine) and Hillsborough (Temple Terrace Recreation Department) to put the squad in prime position for the title while Duval (Boone Park Tennis Courts – Jacksonville) and Pinellas (City of Clearwater) have the inside track on advancing to the men’s 8.0 final.

Pinellas also had a strong day on the women’s side, as the 7.0 crew representing the Tarpon Tennis Club in Tarpon Springs joined another group from Duval’s Boone Park Tennis Courts in Jacksonville as the lone unbeaten teams; Clearwater’s 8.0 women are a dual win over Marion (Fort King Tennis Center – Ocala) away from taking home the crown.
