Wednesday marked the third consecutive day that play was disrupted by rain at the 2017 USTA Boys’ 12s National Clay Court Championships, part of the USTA adidas Junior National Championship Series, held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. Eight players are left in contention for the national title in singles while second round doubles matches remain to be completed.

Two rounds of singles kicked off Day 3, as the round of 32 slimmed down to the quarterfinals by the end of play. Doubles action followed but was washed out once again by severe weather.

Top seed Cooper Williams (New York) has still yet to lose a set, defeating unseeded Zane Ford (Butler, Pa.), 6-2, 6-2, in the third round before posting a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 15 seed Leanid Boika (Delray Beach, Fla.). Williams next faces No. 11 seed Raghav Jangbahadur (Palo Alto, Calif.), who breezed through his pair of matches on Wednesday, including a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over sixth-seeded Thomas Faurel (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

Juncheng Shang (Naples, Fla.) is the lone unseeded player remaining after his stunning 6-0, 7-6(4) upset over No. 3 seed Lucas Brown (Plano, Texas) in the round of 32. He followed that up with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win against Xander Barber (Asheville, N.C.). Next up for Shang will be No. 26 seed James Rico (Cary, N.C.) after he took down a pair of higher seeds on Wednesday. Rico cruised past No. 14 seed Andrew Delgado (High Point, N.C.), 6-3, 6-1, in a Tar Heel state showdown, and then outlasted fifth-seeded Kurt Miller (Los Gatos, Calif.), 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 4 seed Aidan Kim (Milford, Mich.) continued his dominant ways, as he has now lost a combined nine games in four matches. Kim came away from his round-of-32 match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over unseeded Maxim Michaels (Morganville, N.J.), prior to a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of No. 10 seed Nicholas Mangiapane (Davidson, N.C.). No. 24 Kaylan Bigun (Surprise, Ariz.) will be Kim's next opponent, as he also produced a pair of straight-sets wins: 6-1, 6-4 against No. 13 Owen Megargee (Rockville, Md.) and 6-3, 6-1 over Humza Noor (Olathe, Kan.).

The last of the quarterfinals will see No. 2 seed Learner Tien (Irvine, Calif.) and No. 16 seed Garen Spicka (Las Vegas) do battle. Both players have navigated their way through the draw without dropping a set. Tien secured two victories in matches versus seeded foes, first easing by No. 19 Aaron Sandler (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.), 6-1, 6-2, and backing that up with a 6-3, 6-1 win against No. 28 Emon van Loben Sels (Sacramento, Calif.). Spicka took out unseeded Jaxon Lamb (Greeneville, Tenn.), 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 32. He then toughed out a 6-4, 6-3 upset of No. 7 seed Nicholas Herdoiza (West Bloomfield, Mich.).

Thursday’s matches will begin at 8 a.m., starting with all singles and doubles contests that did not finish from Wednesday’s schedule of play. The singles quarterfinals are slated to get underway at 10:30 a.m. For the most updated draws and match times, click here.
