The semifinal field is set after day two of the USTA League National 18 & Over 5.0+  Championships.

Inclement weather led to the women’s flight standings being finalized after a bout of indoor matches in the evening. The tiebreaker procedure was the day’s decider in several scenarios, making or breaking the fates of some teams.

On the women’s side, flight 1 came down to the final dual of the flight Saturday evening, as Missouri Valley clinched their semifinal spot by defeating Southwest. That put them even with Middle States in the standings, where the tiebreaker came down to a comparison of games lost, in which Missouri Valley’s 78 edged them ahead of Middle State’s 86. Texas emerged as the semifinalist in flight 2 with a 3-1 team record, dropping only six sets, the lowest of any team in the women’s championship semifinals.

A close fight in flight 3 ended with Mid-Atlantic claiming their semifinal spot thanks to a 3-1 team record coupled with eight individual wins, besting Southern’s seven. The wildcard spot came down to the wire, needing the final tiebreak criteria being the decider. Southern secured the berth over Middle States in a comparison of games lost (82 for Southern and 86 for Middle States), where a mere four more games was the difference in advancing Southern to the semifinals.

For the men’s division, Mid-Atlantic dominated flight 4, going undefeated as a team and surrendering only two individual courts and seven total sets. Flight 5 was a tight race, as three teams finished with a 3-1 record along with going 8-4 in individual contests.  However, Southern pushed their way into the semifinals by only giving away nine sets, compared to Texas’ 10 and Missouri Valley’s 12. Intermountain claimed the semifinal berth from Flight 6 with an impressive run, finishing 3-0 over the two days, coupled with just seven dropped sets. Texas rounded out the semifinals as the the wildcard entrant of the men’s division, boasting a 3-1 team record, eight individual wins and just 10 sets lost.

Sunday’s semifinals will hit the courts at 8:00 am, with the finals and third-place playoff matches to follow. For completed women’s flight standings and semifinal matchups, click here.
