National adult match play returns to the USTA National Campus this weekend, as the USTA League 65 & Over 7.0/9.0 Invitational will be held from Feb. 7-9. Men’s and women’s squads will be in action within the two divisions, meaning four total titles are up for grabs on the weekend.

Just the men’s 7.0 division will see all 17 USTA Sections represented to start out the event; for the women’s 7.0 division, only the Caribbean Section is missing from the field.

Both 9.0 competitions are on the lighter side, with nine women’s and six men’s squads making the trip. The women’s crews include Intermountain, Mid-Atlantic, Missouri Valley, New England, Northern California, Pacific Northwest, Southern, Southern California, and Texas. The men’s teams slated to compete are Eastern, Mid-Atlantic, Middle States, Northern California, Pacific Northwest, and Southern.

Friday and Saturday will consist of flight play; every team will play two dual matches per day. A dual match is made up of three courts of doubles, with a squad needing to take at least two of those contests for the dual victory. Each individual doubles contest will be the best of three tiebreak sets with a match tiebreak in lieu of a full third set.

Teams placing in the top four of their respective division will move on to Sunday’s playoff rounds. The semifinals are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. with the finals and third-place playoffs to follow at approximately 11:00 a.m.

At last year’s Invitational, rain plagued championship day, preventing three of the divisions from officially crowning a winner. The Southwest (Iron Oaks Tennis Club – Sun Lakes, Ariz.) 7.0 men went undefeated in flight play and looked to be the favorite going into the playoff rounds, while on the 7.0 women’s side the Pacific Northwest (Tri-City Court Club – Kennewich, Wash.) squad were able to host the trophy before play was ultimately halted.

For the 9.0 divisions, the Southern (Independent – Atlanta) and Pacific Northwest (Independent – Northern Ore.) 9.0 men were set to meet in the final while the Southern California (Westin Mission Hills – Rancho Mirage) and Texas (Independent – Abilene) 9.0 women had set themselves up for a clash in the championship dual.
