Flight play wrapped up on Saturday at the USTA Florida Adult 40 & Over 3.5/4.5+ Sectional Championships, as the tournament moves into the championship rounds on Sunday.

All four teams competing in the women’s 3.5 semifinals posted undefeated records in flight play. Collier, advancing out of Flight 1, was an impressive 17-3 in individual matchups en route to winning all four team dual matches; overall, Collier dropped a mere eight sets. SMD-Doral Park, Collier’s semifinal opponent, had a little more trouble navigating its way through Flights 2, but managed to do so unscathed even after losing 16 sets. Marion actually lost more sets in Flight 3 than second-place finisher SMD-Dante Fascell, but by virtue of securing the head-to-head victory when the two teams met, posted a 4-0 record over the two days and kept hope alive for a sectional title. Awaiting Marion Sunday morning is Orange/Seminole, which advanced out of Flight 4, the only flight composed of six teams. Orange/Seminole defeated each of the other five teams to claim the semifinal spot.

The men’s 3.5 semifinals will see Broward go up against Escambia and Alachua take on wild-card entrant Duval-Eagle Harbor. Broward won Flight 1 behind a 3-0 overall dual record and an 11-4 mark in individual courts. Escambia and Hillsborough each finished at 3-1 in Flight 3, but it was Escambia that moved on to Sunday. Alachua was the Flight 2 winner after sweeping through the other three squads, overcoming a total of 13 sets lost. Duval-Eagle Harbor finished second in Flight 1 but grabbed the wild-card spot after emerging victorious in 10 of the 15 individual matches, giving up just 10 sets.

Hillsborough and SMD will play for the women’s 4.5+ championship Sunday morning, as that division contained only two flights. Hillsborough claimed Flight 1 in commanding fashion, allowing its opponents to win only two courts and five sets in three duals. SMD found Flight 2 more challenging, but got through with a 4-0 record even after losing more games, courts and sets than second-place Broward.

Pinellas survived Flight 1 in the men’s 4.5+ division, which involved a double round-robin format (since the flight had a total of three teams). Pinellas defeated Lee/Charlotte twice and split its contests with Duval, but thanks to an impressive 15 individual court wins, easily advanced to the semifinals. Broward was the champion of Flight 3 thanks to an undefeated effort and will be the semifinal opponent for Pinellas. SMD took care of the competition in Flight 2 with relative ease, finishing with 12 victories compared to three defeats in the 15 total singles and doubles matchups. Orange/Seminole earned the division’s wild card by virtue of placing second to Broward in Flight 3, equaling Broward’s 11-4 effort in the 15 total courts contested while actually dropping seven fewer games than the flight champion.

All semifinals will get underway at 8 a.m. Sunday morning. The women’s 4.5+ championship is slated for 9 a.m., while the remaining three finals are scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
