Action at the 2017 USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior Doubles Championships got underway on Saturday, as the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., welcomed boys’, girls’, and mixed doubles duos in the 12s and 14s age divisions. Two rounds were played in all boys’ and girls’ draws while one round was contested in the mixed doubles draws on Saturday.

In the boys’ 12s draw, all eight seeded duos navigated their way through to the quarterfinals except for No. 8 Timothy Pleasant and Charlie Spencer, who were upended by Oumar Diallo and Max Fleisher in a tight 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 opening round match. Diallo and Fleisher kept up their winning ways in the next round to book a place in the quarterfinals. The only other seeded pair to drop a set was No. 2 seeds Andre Medicielo and Hunter Nussbaum; the tandem survived their second round encounter with Alex Giurgiu and Christian Kulendran by a slim 6-2, 4-6, 10-2 margin.

Just one upset highlighted the first day of play in the boys’ 14s draw as well. Valentin Riveros and Greyson Williams cruised in their opening round match 6-1, 6-1 to set up a contest with No. 4 seeds Corey Craig and Max Lindstrom. The unseeded tandem of Riverso and Williams quickly lost the first set 6-0 but hung tough and pulled out the second in a tiebreak, eight points to six. They were able to carry that momentum over to the decisive match tiebreak, defeating Craig and Lindstrom 10 points to four. The fifth-seeded team of Filip Cebic and Ty Rothchild shook off a pair of upset bids by unseeded duos, winning both of their matches on Saturday in match tiebreaks.

Valeria Escalona and Juliana Nieto, seeded eighth in the girls’ 12s draw, narrowly escaped their first round matchup with Harper High and Sydney Paradise, taking the victory 6-4, 2-6, 10-3. They were not as fortunate in the next round, coming up just short against Amber Beautelus and Natalie Outcalt 3-6, 7-6(7), 10-6. The remaining seven seeded teams did not surrender a set in reaching the final eight. Meanwhile the girls’ 14s draw only features four seeds, all of which received a bye in the opening round. In round of 16 action, the quartet of seeds lost a total of eight games to safely move into the quarterfinals.

In mixed doubles, only one round was completed in both the 12s and 14s draws. Mary Boyce Deatherage and Daniel Schaffer, the No. 4 seeds in the 12s draw, outlasted Zach Friedland and Caroline Nicholls 4-6, 6-4, 10-7; all other seeds won in straight sets. The four seeded pairs in the 14s draw will be in action for the first time on Sunday after receiving a bye in the first round on Saturday.

For Sunday’s slate, first matches will take the court at 7:45 a.m. Complete draws and results from the 2017 USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior 12s/14s Doubles Championships can be found here.
