2020 USTA FL 40 & Over 3.0/4.0/4.5+ Sectional Championships
All Four Divisions in Action
October 31, 2020

Saturday marked the second day of matches at the 2020 USTA FL 40 & Over Men’s 3.0/4.0/4.5+ & Women’s 4.5+ Sectional Championships. The day saw all four divisions in action, highlighted by a quartet of squads booking their spot in the men’s 4.0 semifinals.
Duval (Baymeadows Racquet Club – Jacksonville), Broward (Parkland Tennis Center), and Miami-Dade (Ron Ehmann Tennis Center – Miami) all finished atop the standings in their respective flight to automatically advance to the knockout stages of the men’s 4.0 division. Duval had the tiebreaking procedure fall in their favor when a trio of teams finished tied with a record of 2-1 in Flight 1, while Broward’s dominant opening day was enough to get them through Flight 2 despite a loss on Saturday. Flight 3 began the day with two unbeaten crews, only to see a three-way tie at 3-1 created when all duals were completed; Miami-Dade ended up being the team fortunate enough to move on.
Those three will be joined by wild card entrant Pinellas (St. Petersburg Tennis Center) on Sunday, as they finished in the runner-up position in Flight 1 after overcoming a head-to-head loss at the hands of Duval. The semifinal round, slated for 8:30 a.m. Sunday, pits Duval against Miami-Dade while Broward will clash with Pinellas.
The four teams making up the men’s 3.0 competition played just once on the day, with both Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston) and Duval (Florida Yacht Club – Jacksonville) scoring a sweep to get their weekend started. Broward took care of Marion (Country Club of Ocala); Duval cruised past Alachua (Jonesville Tennis Center – Gainesville).
In the two men’s 4.5+ flights, Miami-Dade (Salvadore Park – Coral Gables) is just one more team win away from claiming Flight 1 while it appears Flight 2 will come down to the dual between Broward (Parkland Tennis Center) and Duval (San Jose Country Club – Jacksonville). Miami-Dade went 2-0 on Saturday and only needs to defeat 0-2 Escambia (Independent) for a place in the divisional final. Broward was a perfect 6-of-6 on the courts their players contested, dropping only one set, and Duval also faced very little resistance in their two team victories.
For the lone women’s division being played this weekend, Orange/Seminole (Heathrow Country Club) and Hillsborough (HCC Tennis Complex - Tampa) have put themselves in prime position to take each other on in Sunday’s championship tilt. Orange/Seminole has been the class of Flight 1 through two rounds of duals, recording a pair of sweeps, while Hillsborough only lost one of their six individual matchups. Both will clinch a place in the final with a win Sunday morning, but could also survive being tripped up after their strong opening day performance.
First matches are slated for a 7:30 a.m. start time Sunday. For updated results from the 2020 USTA FL 40 & Over Men’s 3.0/4.0/4.5+ & Women’s 4.5+ Sectional Championships, click here.
