The opening day of the USTA Florida Mixed 18 & Over 6.0/8.0/10.0 Sectional Championships took place Saturday at the USTA National Campus. Highlighting the day’s action in which every squad competed in two dual matches was the squad representing the National Campus clinching the 10.0 title.

Broward (Frank Veltri Tennis Center – Plantation) took control of Flight 1 in 6.0 action by going 2-0 on the opening day. Moreover, having already beaten the two squads sitting at 1-1 overall, Broward only needs to take care of 0-2 Leon (Forestmeadows Park and Athletic Center) to advance to Monday’s divisional championship dual. It appears Flight 2 will be decided when Brevard (Viera Regional Park) and Alachua (Westside Park – Gainesville) square off Sunday morning. The two teams sit atop the standings with 2-0 records after dominating their opponents; Brevard won all six individual matchups by taking 12 sets and Alachua earned five court victories with 10 sets to their credit.

For the 8.0 division, three squads have put themselves in prime position to secure a place in Monday’s semifinal round. Okaloosa/Walton/Bay (Shalimar Pointe Country Club) and Broward (City of Oakland Park) had similar days in Flights 1 and 2, respectively, sweeping all six courts they contested thanks to a 12-of-14 effort in sets played. SMD (Ron Ehmann Tennis Center – Miami) appears to be the class of Flight 3, but did drop one individual matchup and still must defeat Duval (Southside Tennis Complex – Jacksonville) on Sunday.  Meanwhile, Flight 4 should come down to the victor between Hillsborough (HCC Tennis Complex – Tampa) and Brevard (Rockledge). While both undefeated, Hillsborough has yet to surrender even one set.

The Orange/Seminole (USTA National Campus – Orlando) squad clinched the 10.0 title on Saturday thanks to taking down Brevard (Kiwi Tennis Club – Indian Harbour Beach) twice. In their first matchup, the homestanding National Campus team secured a 3-0 sweep after three hard-fought victories. The duos of Adelaide Wood and Jamie Feagan along with Bryn Auld and Neto Cacace came through lines two and three, respectively, 6-4, 7-5. At the top spot, Mika Todo and Marco Herrera rallied for a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 result.

For the rematch, Thomas Knights and Mary Devereaux got Brevard on the board by earning court three 6-4, 6-4, but it still wasn’t enough. Wood and Feagan were in the lineup at line one this time, delivering 6-4, 6-2, while Todo and Herrera competed on court two and were victorious by a 6-3, 6-4 margin.

Captain Wood’s full roster includes Todo, Veronica Barni, Auld, Herrera, Cacace, Stacey Fieldsend, Feagan, Beau Fieldsend, and Karl Davies.
