2019 Orlando UTR Clay Championships Level 7
Play Concludes Sunday Afternoon
February 24, 2019

Two days of play concluded Sunday afternoon at the 2019 Orlando UTR Clay Championships Level 7, a USTA Florida junior event hosted by the USTA National Campus.
All seeding for the tournament was based on the most recent published UTR ratings (Feb. 21); the same ratings were also used to separate larger divisions into multiple draws. In total, the event featured nine boys’ and four girls’ draws – with draws of four players competing in a round-robin format and draws of eight taking part in the compass format.
From those draws, only four seeded champions emerged – No. 2 Mauricio Cardenas (boys’ 12s-14s UTR 4.35-5.05), No. 1 Santiago Cardenas (boys’ 16s-18s UTR 8.14-10.05), No. 2 Carolina Bohrer Martins (girls’ 12s-18s 4.55-5.56), and No. 1 Tanea Spruill (Girls’ 14s-18s UTR 1.04-4.04).
Mauricio Cardenas (Tampa) bested top seed Evan Sheffield (Orlando) via retirement with the score sitting at 6-3, 2-0 in his favor. Santiago Cardenas (Tampa) claimed the highest-rated flight by winning all three of his round-robin matches, getting pushed to the limit by Harrison Michalowski (Orlando) 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 along the way. Bohrer Martins (Orlando) dropped just 12 games in her three matches, highlighted by an impressive 6-0, 6-0 performance in the final. Meanwhile, Spruill (Saint Cloud) outlasted Veronika Nash (Daytona Beach) 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 in the semifinals before turning away Emille Sanders (Daytona Beach) 6-2, 6-4 in the championship round.
Other girls’ champions included Orlando representatives Holland Harris and Hannah Blackman. Both competitors were forced to prevail in a match tiebreak in one round, as Harris battled past No. 2 seed Giselle Adekunle (Daytona Beach) 7-5, 1-6, 10-5 with the title on the line and Blackman rallied by Ana Avramovic (Orlando) 6-1, 4-6, 10-1 in her first match of the weekend.
Joining Mauricio Cardenas in the boys’ 12s-14s winner circle were Matthieu Potter (Jacksonville), Diego Pizarro (Saint Cloud), Ivan Urbanovich (Winter Garden), and Zachary Cohen (Winter Park). Potter was propelled to victory after taking down top seed Tristan Bradu (Orlando) 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 in the semifinals; Pizarro cruised past No. 2 seed Jeffrey Matos (Sanford) 6-3, 6-1 and followed that up with a 2-6, 7-6, 10-4 comeback versus Aaron Lieberman (Palm Coast) in the final. Urbanovich’s draw opened up so that he did not face a seeded opponent, closing out his weekend by defeating Thomas Garcia (Winter Park) 2-6, 6-4, 10-6. Cohen claimed his draw with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 performance against No. 2 seed Miguel Moyano (Orlando).
Richard Victor (Orlando) came through the lone boys’ 14s-18s draw, which proved to be a rigorous one, with five main draw contests going to a match tiebreak. Two of those went the way of Victor, who managed to best the top two seeds in extended battles.
Joshua Edlund (Sanford) looked to have an easy victory in his sight in the final of the boys’ 16s-18s UTR 3.34-4.54 competition, earning a 6-0 opening frame against top-seeded Dhruv Dubey (Lake Mary). Dubey hung in to push the match to the distance, where Edlund won the match tiebreak 10 points to seven. Andres Luigi (Orlando) was one of the most dominant players on the weekend, surrendering a mere 11 games in his three round-robin contests in the boys’ 16s-18s UTR 5.47-6.63 draw.
