Friday marked the opening day of action for the USTA Florida Mixed 18 & Over 7.0/9.0 Sectional Championships. Every squad in the event took part in two matches on the day.

Teams are competing in dual matches consisting of three courts of doubles contests; at least two of those three courts must be won in order to claim the dual.

Turning in an absolutely dominating performance to kick off the weekend was the 7.0 crew from Alachua (Westside Park Recreation Department – Gainesville) to all but clinch Flight 1. Not only did they sweep all six courts, but they did so without surrendering a single set. Pinellas (Seminole Lake Family Tennis) toughed out two dual wins to take control of Flight 2 with one round left to play and Orange/Seminole/Lake (Red Bug Lake Park – Casselberry) owns the inside track in Flight 3 as the lone unbeaten.

Alachua (D B Racquet Club – Gainesville) and Broward (Brian Piccolo Tennis Center – Hollywood) moved to the top of the 9.0 standings by going 2-0 on Friday. Both claimed five individual matchup victories on the strength of 11 sets won compared with just four sets lost. Sarasota (Independent) and Marion (Fort King Tennis Center – Ocala) head into day two with 1-1 records overall while Escambia (Independent) and Orange/Seminole/Lake (Lake Cane Tennis Center – Orlando) remain winless.

Saturday’s schedule of play is slated for a 7:30 a.m. start. For more information on the USTA Florida Mixed 18 & Over 7.0/9.0 Sectional Championships, click here.
