A rainy morning and early afternoon made for a late night at the USTA League National Adult 65 & Over 6.0/8.0 Invitational, hosted by the USTA National Campus. The less than ideal weather resulted in matches being played on three different surfaces until around 11 p.m. Saturday night.

Northern (St Paul Academy & Summit School – Saint Paul, Minn.) and Southern (Independent – Birmingham, Ala.) have officially locked up a spot in the semifinals at 3-0 overall in the men’s 6.0 competition; Northern currently holds the inside track for the top seed. Meanwhile, Texas (Sun City Texas by Del Webb – Georgetown) finished with a 2-2 record, leaving them in limbo as the final round of flight duals play out Sunday morning. Pacific Northwest (Amy Yee Tennis Center – Seattle), sitting at 2-1, will advance to the semifinals with a win Intermountain (Darling Tennis Center – Las Vegas), one of the three 1-2 squads still mathematically alive.

The only sure thing in the women’s 6.0 division is that unbeaten Pacific Northwest (Boeing Employees Tennis Club – Kent, Wash.) will be the No. 1 seed in the semifinal round. A trio of crews – Caribbean (Independent – Puerto Rico), Middle States (Mo’s Tennis & Fitness – East Stroudsburg, Pa.), and Missouri Valley (Parkway Central Middle School – Chesterfield, Mo.) – enter Sunday at 3-1 overall, hoping they have done enough to play for the national title. Three others – Texas (Independent – Northeast Texas), Florida (The Players Club and Spa – Naples), and Hawaii (Independent – Kilauea) – have two dual wins and will be looking to capture a third to vault themselves into the top four.

The final four in the men’s 8.0 division is nearly set after two days of flight action. Middle States (Independent – Delaware) has secured the top seed with a sterling 4-0 record on the strength of 11 court victories. Mid-Atlantic (Cattail & Circle D – Woodbine, Md.) and Florida (Parkland Tennis Center) also navigated through the first two days without suffering a defeat, giving them a place in the semifinals as well. The fourth team to qualify will come down to Eastern (The Tennis King – Port Washington, N.Y.), the top 3-1 crew in the division, and Southwest (Phoenix Tennis Center), who only needs to take down Missouri Valley to advance.

For the women’s 8.0 division, nothing has been settled quite yet. Seven different teams will begin the early morning round still with hopes of being one of the semifinalists. Middle States (Independent – Delaware) is in the best shape at 3-0 overall, having not lost an individual matchup so far. Midwest (Olympic Indoor Tennis – Columbus, Ohio) and Mid-Atlantic (Watkins Regional Park – Upper Marlboro, Md.) are also 3-0 on the weekend, while Texas (Greenhill Tennis Center – Addison) concluded their round-robin duals at 3-1. Needing a team win on Sunday to jump into the top four are Pacific Northwest (Athletic Club of Bend – Bend, Ore.), Northern California (Gold River Racquet Club – Gold River), and Southern (Bitsy Grant Tennis Association – Atlanta).

Sunday’s slate is scheduled for a 7 a.m. start. The divisional semifinals will take to the courts at approximately 9 a.m. with the finals and third-place playoffs to follow. For more information on the USTA League National Adult 65 & Over 6.0/8.0 Invitational, click here.
