The USTA National Campus welcomes the Tennis on Campus Spring Invitational for the first time in the history of the event after hosting the National Championship the previous two years. Play starts the morning of Friday, March 29, and will wrap up on the afternoon of Sunday, March 31.
Taking place on the Har-Tru courts for the weekend, a total of 48 teams will be looking to lock up a spot in the 2020 USTA Tennis on Campus National Championship; both the winning team and the runner-up will earn an automatic berth into next year’s National Championship.
All dual matches will be contested using the World TeamTennis (WTT) format, consisting of five no-ad sets – men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles; mixed doubles is always played last.
The 48 teams have been divided into 12 four-team pools for the round robin portion of the weekend. Following the completion of round robin action, teams will be placed into brackets based on their pool play results. The Gold Bracket will feature the top 16 teams, while the Silver Bracket will be composed of teams 17-24. Teams finishing in the 25-32 slots will compete in the Bronze Bracket, with the squads taking spots 33-40 going into the Copper Bracket. Rounding out bracket play will be teams 41-48 in the Titanium Bracket.
Action gets underway Friday morning at 8 a.m., as the round robin matches will run throughout the day. After the completion of all matches on Friday, the squads will be placed into the brackets, where the first matches will take to the courts at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Sunday will kick off at 8 a.m., including the Gold Bracket semifinals, with the championship match slated for approximately noon.
At last year’s Invitational, Texas posted wins over Butler (30-3), Pittsburgh (27-17), Arizona State (23-19) and finally UC Irvine (29-22) in the Gold Bracket to claim the team trophy. Additionally, USC took home the Silver Bracket title, Minnesota topped the competition in the Bronze Bracket, Arizona played its way to the Copper Bracket crown, and Oregon earned first place in the Titanium Bracket.
