2020 USTA FL Mixed 40 & Over 7.0/9.0 Sectional Championships
Broward 7.0 Takes Divisional Title
October 5, 2020
The only team to enter the day without a loss, the 7.0 Broward (Midtown Athletic Club – Weston) squad capped off a sterling tournament by taking home the divisional title on Monday at the 2020 USTA Florida Mixed 40 & Over 7.0/9.0 Sectional Championships. They joined the 9.0 group representing Pinellas (Innisbrook Resort – Palm Harbor) as victors from the event.
In the 7.0 semifinals, Broward took on homestanding Orange/Seminole (USTA National Campus – Orlando) while Volusia (Florida Tennis Center – Daytona Beach) clashed with wild card entrant Pinellas (Seminole Lake Family Tennis). Both of those duals would end with a 2-1 score line, as Broward and Volusia moved on to play for the championship.
Against Orange/Seminole, Broward dropped line one 7-5, 6-1, putting the pressure on their remaining two pairs. Ronald Coletto and Sondra Carpio came through 7-5, 6-3 at the second spot to go along with Jorge Cortes and Maria Moreno producing a clutch 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 comeback on court three. Volusia also needed to pull out a victory via match tiebreak to advance after losing the contest at the third position. Filmon Yohannes and Stacey Effner breezed through line two 6-3, 6-4, setting the stage for Anthony Truong and Mary Hoffman to deliver the clinching 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 effort on court one.
All three individual matchups making up the championship dual finished in straight sets. Volusia’s Yohannes and Effner played at line one this time, defeating Broward’s Jorge Alejandro Romo and Lizette Ibarra 6-0, 6-4. Coletto and Carpio stayed on court two, once again turning in a solid effort for their crew in cruising past Truong and Susan Hrycyk 6-2, 6-1. The tightest contest took place at line three, where Cortes and Moreno ultimately proved to be too strong yet again, besting Tom Robinson and Hoffman 7-6, 6-3.
The full Broward roster includes captain Enrique Guzman Barron Escobedo, Pradip Chhadva, Carpio, Claudia Torres, Haim Sasson, Moreno, Romo, Cortes, Carla Velasquez, Ibarra, Jorge Prado, Coletto, Tatiana Jimenez, Maria Suarez, and Kerri Pau.
